Oil pressure

Alright im havin a bit of an issue, 96 12v 5 speed, driving around at 55mph my oil pressure is fine at 40. If i go up to 65-70 it drops to almost 0. also if i drive for about 5 miles at about 65, when i stop and am idleing at about 600rpm the oil pressure drops to 0. if i bump it up about 100rpm my oil pressure comes back up. oil level is fine. what could be the problem?? p.s. im not a mechanic (15 y.o.) so please use lamens terms:argh:

Id def get a cheap oil pressure gauge and test to make sure your sending unit isnt acting up. If you had 0 psi for extended periods like u said ud have bigger problems :D I'm thinking gauge issue. I'll shoot a pic tomorrow where the sending unit is

Be warned cummins motors have low oil pressure to begin with the guage in your dash lies to you

I had kinda the same problem... mine would drop to 0 when i stopped at stop signs. turns out it WAY low on oil.:argh: filled her up and didnt have that problem since

i had a sending unit go bad and it did the same thing

does it act up when the engine is cold or barely up to the operating range? Mine is kinda doing the same thing but it only does it when its up to temperature, and when there is a sudden drop in rpms like when its shifting from 1-2 or the TC locks. I am too hoping that its just the sending unit....its got plenty of oil in there, I check it frequently. Im thinking that maybe the sensor geeks out and reads funny when it gets hot :humm:

no i usually don't run 70mph if its not up to operating temp. it acts fine putting around town, but if i hammer on it taking off from a stop sign it will drop. but it baffles me that after running about 70 mph and i am stopped and idling it drops and i bump up the rpm's a little bit and it comes back up. i'm defiantly going to look into the sensor.

i put a pressure gauge in my pod and the sending unit for it is right on top of the oil filter, at idle its says 40ish but then as i go up in rpms it climbs to maybe 50 or 60 psi

that's weird because mine does the exact opposite, at high rpm's the pressure drops to 0:argh:
