Oil pressure
Alright im havin a bit of an issue, 96 12v 5 speed, driving around at 55mph my oil pressure is fine at 40. If i go up to 65-70 it drops to almost 0. also if i drive for about 5 miles at about 65, when i stop and am idleing at about 600rpm the oil pressure drops to 0. if i bump it up about 100rpm my oil pressure comes back up. oil level is fine. what could be the problem?? p.s. im not a mechanic (15 y.o.) so please use lamens terms:argh:

Id def get a cheap oil pressure gauge and test to make sure your sending unit isnt acting up. If you had 0 psi for extended periods like u said ud have bigger problems :D I'm thinking gauge issue. I'll shoot a pic tomorrow where the sending unit is
Be warned cummins motors have low oil pressure to begin with the guage in your dash lies to you
I had kinda the same problem... mine would drop to 0 when i stopped at stop signs. turns out it WAY low on oil.:argh: filled her up and didnt have that problem since
i had a sending unit go bad and it did the same thing
does it act up when the engine is cold or barely up to the operating range? Mine is kinda doing the same thing but it only does it when its up to temperature, and when there is a sudden drop in rpms like when its shifting from 1-2 or the TC locks. I am too hoping that its just the sending unit....its got plenty of oil in there, I check it frequently. Im thinking that maybe the sensor geeks out and reads funny when it gets hot :humm:
no i usually don't run 70mph if its not up to operating temp. it acts fine putting around town, but if i hammer on it taking off from a stop sign it will drop. but it baffles me that after running about 70 mph and i am stopped and idling it drops and i bump up the rpm's a little bit and it comes back up. i'm defiantly going to look into the sensor.
i put a pressure gauge in my pod and the sending unit for it is right on top of the oil filter, at idle its says 40ish but then as i go up in rpms it climbs to maybe 50 or 60 psi
that's weird because mine does the exact opposite, at high rpm's the pressure drops to 0:argh:
when going slow or just idling mine drops to zero randomly
found a replacement for cheap New 98 12V Cummins Oil Pressure Switch ... $35.... awesome :jump: CUMMINS OIL PRESSURE SENSOR ('94-'98, 12V)-Dodge Cummins Diesel Truck Accessories – Geno’s Garage CUMMINS OIL PRESSURE SENSOR ('94-'98, 12V)-Dodge Cummins Diesel Truck Accessories – Geno’s Garage Dodge Cummins Diesel Truck Accessories – Geno’s Garage |
my stock one is screwed up we broke the sensor do a pump swap so i put a new one in an now doesnt work right. so i bought a mechanical oil gauge and installed it last night. holds 50 psi idling and rev it up goes up to 75 or more. havent drove it yet to see what it does

pretty much all the gauges in the stock dash cluster are a guessing game. the best thing to do is to get a alternate gauge set up.
If your gauge and sender and wiring check out ok ( Best way is to remove sender and install a mechanical gauge and run it into the cab for testing/comparing) If that is all working properly, the oil bypass valve is most likely your problem
wheres the oil bypass valve
It will be located either behind the power steering pump or the fuel heater depending on where they wanted to drill it at the factory (all in the same area). Mine was infront of the fuel heater.
To replace it on a 98 you need a 1-1/16" Oil Pressure Sender Socket (long deepweld) for the new sensor. Advanced Auto carries it. The old one you just break off the plastic part and use a regular 1-1/16" socket. |
it's mounted in the oil cooler at the top, just forward of the oil filter head. I tried to 'google' it so i could post a pic for you, but the only thing that shows up is oil bypass filter kits, sorry.

Im having the same problem when I stop. Anyone know where I can buy the oil sensor?
