47RE Trans /Converter Question
which is more prone to slippage under heavy torque? the converter locked up or the 3 gear/od clutch packs... my truck has mild mods but I noticed that on the freeway coming off of a 55 zone getting on it at 1400 rpm at 10PSI it will shoot up to 1800 rpm for about half a second... my first thought is the converter because this transmission dosent even have 10k on it yet and it was built right with the upgraded 3rd & 4th clutch packs with extra frictions & steels, but it has a stock converter, I think I am going to baby it til I can get a Goerend 3 disc converter, opinions?

If the trans is fresh and the VB is built up then I would say the stock converter is most likley your issue. It can't really handle much, and a 12v at the low end can really make some torque! Be nice to it until the new converter. How come the trans got rebuilt but no new converter?

$2k! Wow. Someone tried to pull one over on ya.
Well, I guess you are saving your luch money for the rest of the transmission. What all did you have done? |
Just a bit off the topic, but how come you have a 47RE in a 12V??? I thought due to the required electronic management the 12V was not able to have a RE but must use the 47RH? - can someone shed some light on this for me?
Thx, Tom |
The 47RH was used in 94-95, the 47RE was used 96-03 then in came the 48RE. Although there are some electronic requirements, the 12V (96-98) did have a TPS and the other associated electronics to control the RE transmission.

THX!!!
Is there any way to convert a 94 to take on the 47RE or 48RE at a reasonable price? |
Sure, get a used ECM and transmission out of a 96 - 98 truck. Not sure why you would want to tho? Unless your wanting to use a TC lock-up box or something like the BD Torq/Auto-loc and even then you can accomplish the same thing with a 3 position switch and some wiring on the RH.

was just an idea as the RH is shifting somewhat rough ...
