Modifying my AFC

I am modifying and tuning my AFC, is it okay to run an aftermarket fuel plate or should I run the stock fuel plate with an AFC tuning? I have a #11 plate in it already but still have my stock one on hand. Thanks!

brindle_bull 11-13-2010 01:07 PM

its fine to run aftermarket plates...as long as you keep an eye on things like egts and your tranny can hold up to that and the rest of the performance enhancing stuff

blazier18 11-13-2010 01:46 PM

u can do anything u want as long as u got the air to back it up and better airflow out (exhaust) always helps.

joco12v 11-13-2010 07:24 PM

Well I got it all back together, it seems that with my #11 plate in the stock position, I'm not getting much more out of it, even WITH the modified AFC. Move the plate forward?

joshmock 11-13-2010 07:30 PM

the real question here is why NOT? lol just be careful, don't go breaking nothing and watch your gauges and go for it.

joco12v 11-13-2010 07:41 PM

Nice way to look at it:tu: I did read somewhere that not moving the fuel plate makes tuning the afc pointless, I want to know that it is fact before I take it all apart again to move the plate

Smokem 11-13-2010 07:52 PM

That is far from fact.

joco12v 11-13-2010 07:54 PM

Well I have the afc all modified and seems like no matter what adjustments I make the truck runs the same

joshmock 11-13-2010 09:51 PM

what exactly do you mean by modified (be specific with what you did) and that will allow some more knswledgable guys to further assist you. from my experience just moving the stock plate forward should result in a different feeling in the butt dyno

joco12v 11-13-2010 10:38 PM

I turned the cup washers into flat, I shaved off just under 1/8" on the foot, and adjusted the smoke screw to where it just touches the diaphragm shaft. The truck ran good but wouldn't smoke and had turbo lag, couldn't even get 20psi until after 2000rpm. I slowly adjusted the smoke screw and after a couple hours I noticed that the truck is still doing the same, no smoke with turbo lag

brindle_bull 11-14-2010 12:31 AM

have you tried moving the housing itself forward yet?

joco12v 11-14-2010 12:57 AM

yeah I've tried it forward and in the middle, maybe just keep turning in the smoke screw?

daveO 11-14-2010 08:14 AM

It seems to me that you need to move your plate. A lot of AFC mods don't really do anything if the plate is still in the stock location.

85_305 11-14-2010 09:41 AM

Dude just put the damn plate all the way forward and be done with it (and dont fry your auto/clutch)

Smokem 11-14-2010 11:56 AM

The AFC controls the rate at which fuel is delivered, lowering spring pressure will bring the fuel in earlier, as will inceasing the starting position of the off idle adjustment(smoke screw). If you are not altering the rack stop(plate), you will not increase hp or delivered fuel quantity.

Have you messed with the star wheel at all? or is that what you referring as the smoke screw?
Attachment 44360
Just remove the plate completely once and see how you like it. But keep a eye on the egts if you on the go pedal

joco12v 11-14-2010 06:49 PM

Okay I moved the #11 plate all forward. I adjusted the smoke screw to where I'm getting just a haze of smoke until about 6-7 psi.
I adjusted the star wheel as far out as I could and still cannot get even a haze of smoke after 6psi. My boost seems to start slowly climbing at 1500rpm and finally hits 30psi(which is where I set it) at about 2300 rpm. Everything sound right or no?

85_305 11-14-2010 06:56 PM

Seems like your boost is coming in high? It's been a minute since i've had my cummins, but I thought that boost came in hard right around 21-2200 rpms?

bulldog77 11-14-2010 07:02 PM

Turn star wheel all the way in towards the front of the motor and start to turn it back towards the cab till its where you like it.

blazier18 11-14-2010 08:26 PM

i didnt cut my foot i cut the barrel. anyways where did u move your starwheel too? did u adjust ur plate forward? afc ff?

joco12v 11-14-2010 11:02 PM

My starwheel is all the way forward, my afc is ff as well, and so is the fuel plate, so pretty much everything is full forward and I'm losing my smoke after 6psi

Smokem 11-15-2010 09:00 AM

Your losing fuel pressure.

blazier18 11-15-2010 01:06 PM

x2 on fuel pressure theres no way u shouldnt see big results with the right plate and everything forward.

daveO 11-15-2010 01:55 PM

When was your last fuel filter change? Did you clean the strainer? Simple places to start. :pca1:

joco12v 11-15-2010 09:10 PM

ALRIGHT I took the plate out now to see if I got more of a gain, trying to eliminate what could be wrong.
I am burning coal now under 6 psi(I'm going to adjust that smoke screw more now), my boost is way better now. Instead of hitting 30psi at 2300rpm, I was passing 30psi going to 40psi at 2000rpm, I had to let off the throttle obviously as I saw the gauge still climbing.
I'm going to make a boost controller tonight to hold my boost at 33ish.
Since the truck performed way better with the plate out compared to with the #11 ff, does that eliminate the fuel pressure possibility?
My fuel filter is new along with a new lifter pump

bulldog77 11-15-2010 09:17 PM

Imho, your fuel pressure is fine. I would still clean the prefilter screen or get a new one from cummins for like $8, dont go to dodge and get one, I think they want around $44 for one. Just keep a eye on the egts. The first time I pulled the plate I had stock sticks and stock timing and hit 1400* pretty easy.

Smokem 11-15-2010 10:07 PM

You have revealed the issue, now to see how many people can tell you the cause.

joco12v 11-15-2010 10:15 PM

Surprisingly I still only got my egt's up to 1000, maybe because I was letting off the throttle once it tried going beyond 30psi

85_305 11-15-2010 10:24 PM

Dude dont use a boost controller just get a damn boost elbow for $5

Governor arm stuck under the fuel plate.

joco12v 11-16-2010 10:57 AM

I am MAKING a boost elbow/controller out of brass fittings, with an adjustable t-fitting
