12 valve oil pressure

When i run interstate or pull big load and come to a stop my oil pressure goes to 0 but it shoots back up after i get off idle. What could this be? Thanks. It only does it when its warmed up.:argh:

my 96 does it to, maybe it is bad oil pressure sensor

daveO 07-08-2010 06:00 PM

Mine also does it. Gets worse when it's hot outside. I figured it just might be that when it's hot out, the Amsoil I'm running in it is getting too thin for my oil pump to pick up?

I'd put a good mechanical gauge on it, at least for a one-time check just to confirm what's going on.

The probably clean the contacts on the sensor or replace the sensor.

BlackCloud96 07-08-2010 06:36 PM

sensor or gauge is your problem i dont think it is major!:humm:

My 98 did the same thing. It was the oil sending unit. Cost about $100 at oriley auto parts.

Dr. Evil 07-08-2010 08:03 PM

Get it from Cummins, the parts store senders dont last very long.

or it could be low on oil, dont laugh i did it when i was younger, i was driving home from up north one night and when i stopped the oil pressure went to 0, it was only 2gals low, lol now i check my oil all the time

That sucks. I was thinking that, so I checked it out already. :tu:

Its the oil pressure sender as already stated.
Buy it from Cummins as Doc said or you will do it again.
ITs a PIA to do as its behind the P7100 and not directly accessible and you need to plan on bending like Gumby to get the job done.

cumminspwr11 07-11-2010 11:48 PM

do it from underneath its a bit easier

NO KIDDING - its pretty hard to get to this to replace. Long arms would really help.

Hammer 07-14-2010 07:29 AM

I did my first one way back around 90k and muttered a few too many kinda words about the placement and my large frame trying to hang over top of a newly leveled front end.

Its been acting up again but this time I have a plan...
The new pump is ready for the truck and when we swap them out I will make the change and also add a mechanical as a secondary to ensure I know whats going on.That way I do not have to imitate Gumby and do it the hard way..LOL.

mine does it too. does it more after i climb big hills..
could this be where im leaking oil from cause im having a hard time finding where its leaking from

The sensor is $35 on genos garage.

It will be located either behind the power steering pump or the fuel heater depending on where they wanted to drill it at the factory (all in the same area). Mine was infront of the fuel heater.

To replace it on a 98 you need a 1-1/16" Oil Pressure Sender Socket (long deepweld) for the new sensor. Advanced Auto carries it. The old one you just break off the plastic part and use a regular 1-1/16" socket.
