how much timing

ok well i got a p pump on now and ill be setting my timing tomorrow.

i got 5x.014 sdx injectors, 131dv's, phat shaft turbo.

i only want to time it once i dont want to mess with all the time. in the next 2 weeks its going to get 191 dv's, 4kgsk, 60 lb valve springs.

so i want to set the timing to what will work with those settings. i was thinking about 20*.

does that sound about right or do i need more or less?

94 12valve 05-06-2010 10:20 PM

Do you have studs? it you do 20* is fine.

tltruckparts 05-06-2010 10:57 PM

no but i plan on doing them in the very near future

Shea@L&N Performance 05-07-2010 08:24 AM

20 sounds good as long as you get those studs in

oglejust 05-07-2010 12:29 PM

damn.. now u guys r makin me want to put mine to 20!

12vcummins96 05-07-2010 12:32 PM

17 to 20 anywhere in that region

tltruckparts 05-07-2010 06:24 PM

well money got a little tighter today so studs wont be as soon as id like so im probably going to go to 18 and stay there until i do studs

monster12valve 05-07-2010 06:33 PM

16.5* is as high as i would go with out studs.. imo.. but i am not a gambling man!

tltruckparts 05-07-2010 10:24 PM

so what is the difference in 16.5* as compared to 20* from the studs standpoint? will give more boost or what makes it worse without studs?

lodal cummins 05-07-2010 11:12 PM

the big increase in cylinder pressure will stretch your stock bolts and cause your head gasket to go to crap.:dang:

tltruckparts 05-07-2010 11:17 PM

oh got ya. looks like 16.5 it is. for the time being at least:w2:

Hammer 05-08-2010 09:15 PM

I would never go to any timing above 16-16.5 degrees without studs and an o-ringed head. The increase in cylinder pressure will cause a premature failure of the headgasket.

I got 19* on mine and my mileage is crap. MY mileage went from 18.5 to about 15 with upping my timing. I'm going to back it off to about 16.5* or 17* and see what happens

wildman6bt 05-16-2010 01:00 PM

How much timing can you go and still start easy in the winter?

12valvetater 05-16-2010 01:12 PM

Mine started fine at 19*. Well If the temp stayed above 8* after that it was a bear.

Hammer 05-16-2010 01:34 PM

I ran mine at 20 degrees all winter long with no issues at all. They are a bit fussy to start when you run higher timing but can be started. With mine as long as the temps were above 20 all I had to do was the normal start up procedure, below 20 I had to cycle the grids a second time and she would start off.

set mine to 16.5 the other day it dont run bad but sure run alot smoother my first good pull on it snaped my inputshaft
