factory cummins/allison
i saw a transmission that caught my eye.supposed to be an allison that came behind a 5.9 cummins in a schoolbus.year 1995.has anybody heard of this,i can get this real cheap if it's worth it.

IVE HEARD SOMETHING LIKE THIS B4 BUT IM NOT SURE WHAT YRS IT IS.
We have 5.9 cummins with allisons in our crew trucks.. Ford 750 and above.. that trans would never fit in your truck without some serious cutting... I think it is an allison 5000 or something like that...
i had the chance to but a 91 cummins with allison bolted up to it, that also came out of a school bus... they only wanted 1200 i should have bought the set up
will it fit in my truck though?
compare it to the size of yours
I'm still checking on this, but I do not believe that the Allison transmission used in buses is an overdrive model.
let me know
I was wrong. They have a double OD, 5th and 6th gear in the latest offerings. I'm not sure how far back they go though (which model years and whether the newest models are available in salvage yards).
Here is Allison's spec sheet: http://www.allisontransmission.com/s...t=SA3742EN.pdf None of these are rated to take more than around 300 hp or 600 ft/lbs torque. In other words, they are almost bullet proof in a stock application, even one that is moving 30K pounds, but not for higher hp figures. |
which one do you think i'm lookin at?
our garbage trucks have the 5.9 with the allison tranny. i have been driving the same one for 10 years with the VE-pump and we work the crap out of those motors. stop/ go plus hitting the engine speed up to pack the trash every other stop. never had a problem with this motor in 10 yeas. cummins= amazing!!!!! truck weight is 23,000 empty my max load was 41,000 and that motor takes it!!!!
does the allisons hold up in the garbage trucks?
Or church bus has a cummins with a allison tranny behind it and we turn the cummins up cause its a 12valve and the tranny is ether geared so low or it has a govenor but it will only do 65 so i dont know if that transmission wouldnt be the same on your truck.
the allison has had no problem at all! heck i think they service them about once every 5 years. not good! but our trucks are so low geared that they will only go 50 on the highway (empty) doing about 2600 rpm.
