What size is our stock exhaust?
Is it 4"? My old psd was only 3.5", but this looks bigger than my psd. I'm doing my straight pipe and cat delete shortly and was wondering what size to tell the exhaust shop
|
3" When I first got my truck the muffler was rattling so I got a 3" chunk of exhaust with flares on either end and some band clamps. I hated it like that. Bought a 4' and liked it a whole lot better. FYI, there are some sponsors here selling 4" exhausts for a bit over $300 (IIRC)...
|
I'm trying to do this cheap for right now. YOu sure its only 3"? The tail pipe looks HUGE.. closer to 3.5-4".
Someday I'll get a 5" exhaust but for now I just need to fix my exhaust thats broken lol |
Measure it - I have not seen your truck personally so its pretty hard for to answer this question. I have no idea if thats a stock exhaust or not. Im telling you what was on there from the factory.
|
It looks stock, has the stock hanger where it exits, has the stock muffler and cat etc I can only imagine its stock. 3" it is! Seems obnoxiously small but easier piping to come by I suppose.
|
mine was 3inch stock
|
open her up and let er breath, expandit is dirt cheap and a hell of a system if you wanna go cheap
|
mine was 3 from turbo to cat then went to 4 to muffler then back to 3 after muffler, its a 1996 so dunno if that helps. just get a mrbp straight 4" for 259 bucks and make it easy man.:tu:
|
Ya I'm def. gonna get an mbrp or farm boy diesel 4-5" sooner or later, but I just need a quick fix to a break in my exhaust line for right now. I've got a few other issues to clear up before I get my goodies :(
|
ThIs is another thing you can do yourself if you wanna do it on the cheap! It's def 3", just take a sawsall and hack the cat and muff out in one piece and measure the section when it comes out. Head down to napa and get the according length of pipe with two stainless steel band clamps. Put the pipe in place and bolt the clamps tight done! No hangers required since there is hardly no weight there.
---AutoMerged DoublePost--- Oh and btw NEVER buy anything from FarmBoy he is a pos and rips people off and says he makes alot of stuff none of which is tru. My 2 cents |
^Ouch harsh words on Farm Boy? Everybody on powerstrokediesel.org has had good luck with fbd. I guess the cummins crowd doesnt lol.
So would 3" flex-pipe suffice?? That flexy exhaust piping? Or would it have to be actual exhaust piping? Thats not a half bad idea and would be a good way of blowing one day out of the weekend hehe. BTW your common rail looks boss |
Exhaust on all the 2nd generations are 3 inch back to the last part of the tailpipe which opens up to 4inch.
Remember if you cut the cat and muffler out to bend the pipe with the same offset so you do not have to modify the clamps or hangers at all. I would not use flex pipe as you do not want the tailpipe to have any chance at moving around, but, its your truck not mine. You can buy the muffler elimination kit from Geno's Garage for about $70 with a clamp. |
I'm going to keep my tail pipe hooked up, so the tail pipe still has stability from that rear hanger. If I get flex pipe, cut the cat and muffler off and hook the flex pipe up to the stock hung tail pipe, that should suffice until I can get a real exhaust underneath me shouldn't it? If ANYTHING I can put some coat hangers up or wire under there until I can get the real deal mounted
|
Im sure the flex pipe is going to cost more than the straightpipe. My straightpipe was like $30. I dont think the flex pipe is teh way to go. Do it right.
Oh and FYI Gus from Farmboys Diesel is a real piece of work. Hes even ripped off some of our staff... |
Thanks man and yea a chunk of pipe will be ALOT better and cheaper and then you won't have to rig up any coat hangers....

From the begining of the cat to the end of the muff yes. This is what I did on my 2000 before I bought 4".

I think mine was around 4' but just put two marks where your gonna cut and grab a tape measure and a bud and go from there.NAND for the sound yes it will sound badass!
|
Good deal good deal. I'm pumped. Piped cummins have always sounded so boss. Kinda like a detroit. They both have that distinct rumble to them.
