diesel fuel in oil pan???

I checked my dip stick at fill up time, like I'm sure most of us do, and discovered my oil level was overflowing and very thin, appearing to be fuel leaking into the crank case from IP. Is this a common issue that can be fixed with a seal on the pump? I immediately drained oil and filled with fresh but now am fearful of driving this until I get it figured out.

Dr. Evil 02-12-2010 11:25 PM

Are you idleing for long periods in the cold? Which could cause fuel to wash past the rings.

Could also be a bad injector(s).

If youve got that much fuel in the oil - you need to keep an eye on it for sure.

Overload 02-12-2010 11:38 PM

Its a 94. It also has really, really bad power. If I am pulling anything it lugs down. I was assuming injectors were the problem for the low power problem, but could they also be the culprit for the fuel in oil? Did I put this question in the wrong forum? Why was it moved?

Dr. Evil 02-12-2010 11:46 PM

Yes the injectors could be causing fuel in the oil.

tltruckparts 02-12-2010 11:46 PM

if its a 94 p pump it should be in the 2nd gen forum.

if an injector is sticking open it will allow fuel to get in there. another problem they have is when the lift pump starts going out it was drop that fuel right in there as well

Overload 02-13-2010 12:00 AM

Most common problem for low power is bad injectors? trucks got 230,000 miles. No pump adjustments. I was content with low power on this truck as it was a backup but now that im finding fuel in oil I will change them out, will also take a look at the lift pump as thats a common thing I should have thought about anyways, thanks for that! Anything else can think of? For some reason I feel theres a shaft seal in IP that separates the fuel from oil, not the case?

Also, no smoke out tail pipe, at all??? Shouldnt there be white smoke if injectors are bad as its not burning?

NadirPoint 02-13-2010 12:05 AM

Sound more like the rare piston LP failure to me.

How many miles on it?

Overload 02-13-2010 12:15 AM

about 230,000. Please explain piston LP?

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

The crazy thing here is I have an 03 with a 96 12 valve in it and I have the same low power problem, I replaced the Lift pump and it did not solve it. That motor had about 240,000 miles on it. Seems like I need a few sets of injectors?

NadirPoint 02-13-2010 12:17 AM

It's the fuel transfer pump down on the driver's side of the block. It's uncommon, but if the piston seal fails badly enough it can allow fuel to ingress to the crankcase. That, or injectors is about the only way you're getting fuel in there. If the injectors were allowing that much fuel in I think you would be seeing alot of other secondary severe running symptoms, knocking, smoke, etc.

lodal cummins 02-13-2010 12:18 AM

i would say injectors. buddy of mine had the same problem.

Overload 02-13-2010 12:25 AM

What should I expect to pay for a generic hp set of injectors, Im not into the max HP thing as I cant keep transmissions under the trucks as they are, but I would like to know a reasonable price to pay for a set of injectors.

tltruckparts 02-13-2010 01:02 AM

seems like about 350-500 is the "general" price range for a decent set of injectors

NadirPoint 02-13-2010 01:05 AM

What pressure is the LP putting out?

That answer right there will tell you where to spend the money.

STUMPMAN 02-13-2010 08:48 AM

stock LP would put out anywhere from 5 to 20 psi. I could get mine to drop to 1 or 2. I've seen IP fail on these motors and spill oil in the crankcase. I had a broken excavator in my yard and half a basement for my garage for a week.

captain_stabbin 02-13-2010 08:51 AM

or you could have you injectors tested!!

9412Valve 02-13-2010 09:51 AM

Leaky injector or injectors is what it sounds like to me..

Overload 02-13-2010 10:49 AM

but

Wouldn't I see smoke out the tail pipe if the injector was not popping correctly?

yes, you should see white smoke when an injector is sticking. mine smoked white like crazy when i had my injector hang up

We're talking about a 2nd Gen P7100 truck with a piston LP that should be making at least 30psi if it's healthy. It is not possile for the inline P7100 IP to put fuel in the cankcase. You are talking about the earlier VE rotary IP.

Is it fairly safe to say I need to pull my injectors then and see if they are the culpit. It sounds like injectors can be bad by leaking when their cylinder is not tdc and it is pushed thru the rings, which would make less fuel for each hit because the lines are depleted of full fuel. Is this what could be happening and explain why I see no smoke?

tltruckparts 02-14-2010 01:22 AM

white smoke is raw unburnt fuel so no matter when its going into the cylinder if there is too much fuel in there your either going to run rich (black smoke) or just send out way too much raw fuel (white smoke) and/or cause rough idle. if it runs fine and doesnt smoke at all, im almost willing to bet its not an injector problems

2500HeavyDuty 02-14-2010 01:38 AM

the same thing happens on the lb7 dmaxes when they crack an injector body, have a loose line(supply or return since they are both under the valve covers). they need to be checked out

NadirPoint 02-14-2010 01:50 AM

Are you going to check the lift pump before or after you start messing with the injectors?

I usually do the easy stuff first, but that's just me... :w2:

x2. check out the 150 dollar lift pump before you start messing with 500 dollars injectors

Drothgeb 02-14-2010 09:48 AM

If it is your injectors and you wanna go cheap. A set of rebuilt injectors on ebay go for about $200. I'm not sure about quality, but for a backup truck they're probably ok. Check your lift pump first though, if that goes it can take your IP with it! $$$$

9412Valve 02-14-2010 09:57 AM

If you narrow it down and it isn't the LP, PM me, I've got a set of stock injectors from my 94 12V that I'd be willing to sell cheap.

Overload 02-14-2010 10:12 AM

yes, checking

Im going to check the LP prior to money being dropped. To sort out confusion, What am I checking on the LP? That its pumping, or that its pumping ~30lbs? Asking in the sense that I do not not know the common failure. The problem that I have with this being the lift pump is my 2003 with a 96 12 valve has the same exact problem, and I already replaced lift pump. Yes, it's a weird coincidence that both my trucks are struggling with this, but on the 03,it didn't solve the problem. But on the other hand the fact that no smoke really makes it hard to assume injectors. When an IP fails, does it always make it harder to start? Or is it simply lacking power and lower mileage? When the IP goes out, does it always smoke? I'll have answers tonight regarding LP. Help on my other questions is much appreciated.

NadirPoint 02-14-2010 02:46 PM

You need to put a gauge on it and see what pressure it's making. You can get a cheap test gauge at a parts store or tool shop for not much $.

You should have done that with the other one first, instead of just throwing parts at it.

Cody Cummins 02-15-2010 07:48 PM

Is it possible that the oil and fuel are getting mixed in the p-pump?

swamprat 02-16-2010 06:55 PM

diesel in fuel

injection pump seal causes this problem alot . hope it helps:c::c::c:
