Transmission Slipping

Hi yesterday we got a 1998 Dodge Ram 5.9 Diesel it go into reverse fine and drives good in reverse with no problem and it goes into drive but when you hit the gas is starts slipping and i hear a noise like bells. If i accelerate while is in park i hear the noise comming from somewhere in the transmission. Any idea what could be the problem. Thank you guys :argh:

sounds like the tranny warning bell to me :humm:

whats yer fluid level

Lil Red Express 01-12-2010 06:51 PM

Does it do it when in nuetral? Reason I ask is the fluid pumps on those stockers don't turn in park. It sounds like the TC is toast. Is the fluid burnt?

Randy4541 01-12-2010 07:07 PM

yes the fluid smells burnt and little smoke comes out the funnel

Lil Red Express 01-12-2010 07:45 PM

change the fluid and filter. If that doesn't fix it then its toast.

Randy4541 01-12-2010 07:50 PM

Can i just change the TC or do i also need 2 change something else

latenighthaulers 01-12-2010 08:11 PM

sounds like the front pump may be gone

Diesel Nut 01-12-2010 09:40 PM

If it goes fine in reverse then the pump is fine.

It flows through the pump in Park, just not the transmission cooler.

What you are describing sounds like rear clutch failure, or low line pressure. I don't know about the sound, but I am willing to bet the transmission needs to be gone through.

Any 1 know were i can get some info on how 2 rebuild this transmission

If you're looking to rebuild it yourself the service manual has everything you need to know, I rebuilt my 98 using the 2001 service manual. Joel's Garage has an excellent write up on rebuilding a 47rh there are a few differences between the rh and re but well worth the read if you have never torn into a transmission and want to rebuild one yourself.

there are little aluminum planetary gears in that transmission, THey could have failed, I'm not sure of there location or what they do, but I've seen them replaced before

WE can set you up with everything you need to overhaul it, and if you have a question we are only a phone call away. You will need to either purchase or build some special tools to get this done properly.
