Clutch Replacement

last night i pulled my tranny out so i can put my new clutch in. i was able to pull that tranny out withh nothing but 2 ratchet straps an my hands. i pulled the tcase off an dboth drivelined. i left the cross member in. i unbolted the 4 bolts that hold the tranny to the bell housing and slid the tranny back 14 inches resting it on the cross member using the ratchet straps as a cradal

you took your trans out with two ratchet straps and left the cross member in? are you posting this to try and impress us?

I just have one question ... why?

I'm a firm beleiver of the "work smarter not harder" saying and here is my advice to ya ... Go to wal mart buy a cheep floor jack, and drop the cross member and slide it out like your suposed to. It will make life way easyer when you try to put the trans back in.

94cummins12v 12-18-2009 09:07 AM

oh it made it 10 times easyer than pulling that stupid cross member abd dropping it on the floor

94 12valve 12-18-2009 11:12 AM

the cross member is easy to pull and replace

12vcummins96 12-18-2009 12:21 PM

i hate those damn crossmember:bat:

the best way I have found is to remove the rubber peice that connects the cross member, use a rubber hammer to hit the cross member up as far as you can, and slide it out.

OR use a jack to spread the frame rails appart slightly and it will fall out

I have a cheap Porto-Power from Harbor freight that I picked up when I did my trans to pull the cross member.....mad things much easier and it's a nice tool to have in the garage.

they arent easy to pull at all there some trucks ive spent a good hour fighting that and there is no point pulling the crossmeber and tranny all the way out if you dont have to

I just told you how to do it the easy way ... after I take the drive shafts off it takes under 10 min to get the cross member off

mtzrpr 12-19-2009 10:57 PM

i dont see how its possible, everytime ive ever pulled a nv you have to drop it some to get the shifter housing down below the floorboard. i have a porta-power it makes this job ALOT easier.

94cummins12v 12-20-2009 09:59 AM

we cut the floor board years ago so we didnt run into the problem again

jack it up remove the rubber that connects it to the corss member, hit the cross member up and slide it out, then lover the trans and slide it out.

i know that, i jack the trans up, remove the cross member and lower it. what im stating is that i didnt see how you can slide the trans straight back and rest it on the crossmember, the shift tower always hits the floorboard. but after he said that they cut out the floorboard it all makes sense.

took me three days in the schools shop to do the clutch lol.
i used jacks to spread the rails. cross member fell right on my friend haha:s:

dan your somethin else little dude, this thread was intended juts to explain that it is posible to replace the clutch without removing the crossmember

12.valve.hauler 12-23-2009 11:15 AM

but that requires cutting the floor board so i think it may be an option that not many people take. i would rather pull a cross member than cut on my truck

94cummins12v 12-23-2009 11:47 PM

who cares about a cut floor board you never notice it its under the crapet and insulation

PhilipR 12-24-2009 07:54 AM

I do....why cut the floor when you can take out four bolts and remove the cross member. I'm lazy but not that lazy.

94cummins12v 12-24-2009 11:36 AM

lazy aint got nothin to do with it

12.valve.hauler 12-24-2009 11:46 AM

what happens when the bare metal starts to rust or when the carpet and padding get wet and you just cant figure out where that mildew smell is coming from? then you either have to cut out and repair metal or shampoo and replace carpet. all because of that cut floor board that you cant notice

stillbad 12-24-2009 11:55 AM

:humm: why would you do that? lol

i think its retarded myself but thats my opinion. :td:

94cummins12v 12-25-2009 11:02 PM

thats why it is your opinion. i put i ruber sheet over the metal floor board before insulation and carpet. my uncle does apolstry for high end hot rods so carpet wasnt an issue
