12 Valve help

What is the best transmisson to use on my 94-98 12valve cummins. And is there differnt types of turbos that came with the 12 valve becuase i got my motor out off a old bus and didnt know if it was the same as the 12 valve in the 2500 or 3500 :argh:

NV4500 tranny and hx35/40 hybrid for a stocker type turbo

Racer9 11-25-2008 08:37 PM

Different applications had their own stats. It might be the same as 25/3500, just check the tag on the turbo. It might say HX35, which is what the p/u's have.
As far as trans, what are you planning to do with it? Daily driver with no power upgrades, an auto will be fine.
All out puller, you'd be better off with a standard.
Like to shift, go manual, don't like to, go auto.
Autos can be upgraded to handle more power but $$.

I want to make a puller with it so i want a manual what type of manual trans would be the best for the $$. could get an adapter for a non dodge trans but know what kind that would be.

nah ya really dont need to go with a different maker of tranny, the NV4500 would be your best bet, just get a good clutch and the bigger input shaft and pull away:choochoo: the tranny should be fine til like 5-600 ponies

I would go with a nv4500 and the linkage and shifter out of the 98-02 and add a bd short shifter. through a south bend dual disk in. As for turbo for pulling. Are you going to run single or twins? I would say a sled puller 66 and ddp4s should put you there with some pump tweaking and maybe 191s

i though you couldnt put a short shift kit in a nv4500 i cant find a place that sells them for the 5 speed

Right here: BD Power - Product: Short Shift Kits

94cummins12v 11-26-2008 12:41 AM

ya but that only says 1998 and up nv4500's not a 94

stkdram55 11-26-2008 01:16 AM

thats why he said to go with the linkage from a 98-02 model even though im not sure that is possible, the top plate on the transmissions are different from 94-98 12v's there kinda of at an angle where as on the later models its more straight across and it makes it easier to pull the tranny since you can reach thru the floor and take everything off and drop the trans straight down instead of having to turn it a little to get the earlier models out:argh:

i didnt have to turn mine just bent the hell out of the floor plate

thats way to do it:U: something will have to give eventually

but back to the question cant you take a NV4500 out of a 1998-2002 or will it not fit

94cummins12v 11-26-2008 11:25 AM

it should fit they uses the same adaptor plet for the 5.9 cummins, and the same bell housing

You caught me on that one - I just assumed all NV-4500HD's were the same.

xzaq103 11-26-2008 01:54 PM

They are

Its the linakge thats different. If you wanted to run that you would have to get the linkage and shiter parts from a 98 - 02 5 speed.

The tranny is the same internally... The linkage is different, but even linkage from the 98+ won't work, it has a different top plate for the case. The 98+ have a bolt on style shifter, while the 94-97 had a gay way of doing it, I know... I have one. You cannot put a short shifter into a 94-98 tranny without changing top plates to a 98+, but the 98+ tranny's have a way shorter throw already, so it seems lame to put in a shift kit into a tranny that shifts short already.

You are very much correct.
The only other difference is how the t-case shifter mounts. I just put an 01 nv4500 in my 97. I guess the 01 t-case shifter mounts to the floor?:humm: On the 97 it bolted to the tailshaft housing. The places for the bolts where there on the 01 nv4500, so we drilled and tapped them. You can definitly tell a big difference in the shift throw.
