I added a second cooler and installed both between the intercooler and the radiator. I tranny temp hasn't been about 175° in about 2 weeks. And that's sitting in traffic. I appreciate the feedback fellas.

When it's 90° out and I'm pulling eight tons through the city from stop light to stop light, never getting fast enough to move any air through anything or even fast enough to get the convertor into lockup, yeah. It's going to get hot. The biggest cooler and strongest fans in the world aren't going to keep it under 150° if you can't get out of 1st gear for two hours in summer traffic.

AHH, having the electric fan is a MUST !!!!

To be fair, there are a number of other factors that are less than ideal with my situation. The very tight triple disc TC for one, makes a ton of heat; but that I still have the anti-freeze "cooler" hooked up isn't helping. Nor is my original equipment cooling system, or that half the fins on my trans cooler are bent over.

Regardless, no matter what fan you're using, pulling blistering hot air through a cooler is not going to do much against dragging a heavy load through town and never getting out of first gear, especially when there's hills. Maybe it's different other places, but it isn't unusual for ambient temps on the road to be well into three digits here and nearly 100% humidity. Start, stop, start, stop, start, stop...

I know what ur sayin ... and yes with than many issues ... ur trans isn't gonna last.

I have a 1700 single and my trans never goes past 130* .. as of yet .. and I have an external cooler post Coolant heat exchanger as well .. in pan 130* was all I could manage .. w/o OD on and going up hill not locked up .. just for fun

but the cooler you can keep it .. the longer it will last.. :tu:

Well, I got over 100K out of it so far. Pulling overweight trailers hundreds of miles a week, generally working the hell out of it 10 or more hours a day all year long. I have never met a single person, IRL or online, who works a Dodge automatic anywhere near as hard as I work mine for even half the hours a day or a fraction of the miles. My fluid is always clean and clear when I change it and it just keeps pulling. It's already lasted longer than anyone but the builder said it would, and I have no reason not to expect it won't continue to do so.

Regardless, 150 isn't hot. Neither is 160, 170, or 180. As long as it's cooler than the engine coolant, it's fine. If it doesn't last at those temps, it either wasn't built right or you're asking more of it than it was built to take. And that's a good thing, because if you drive it like I do, there's no avoiding it. No cooler, no fan is going to prevent those temps doing what I do all day in the blazing summer heat, in the towns and traffic I do it in.

Damn straight. So that cooler you posted fits in the stock location? Or is added somewhere else? There's quite a bit of room up there, but I'm not sure about 3.5" deep.

mine is going in the well behind the cab under the bed .. just infront of the right rear tire .. many guys running it there .. short lines and lotts of air that can be had there as well ..:tu:
