Transmission problem help please

Hey guys I have a 97 12v cummins, 100hp injectors, built auto tranny, 285,000 miles, truck runs amazing, tranny was rebuilt Probibly 50,000 miles ago, never had any trouble out of it, untill today jumped in it this morning let her warm up for about 15 mins then left for work, well I noticed it was shifted kinda hard and 5 (overdrive) wouldn't shift, then after work none of the gears would shift, you back off then accelerate again then it would shift? It's full of tranny fuild, ran just fine last night now it won't hardly shift, don't run it wide open or take off fast, is there a synchronizer somewhere? Or is there something I'm missing?

U need to do a service .... sounds like your filter needs to be changed .. same thing with mine ... shifts aresome now ....

I didn't know they had 5 speed automatics.

RedChevy44 11-08-2013 10:47 PM

They dont have 5 speeds. Its a 4 speed but he is counting the torque converter lockup as a shift which it isnt even though it seems like one.

So is it missing OD, or lockup?
Either way, I'm with 4x4man. If it's been 50K and you haven't yet, it's definitely time change the fluid/filter. Even if you have serviced it before, unless it was very recent then popping it open and having a look in the pan is a good place to start.

Changed the fluid and filter, od and my lock up still don't work, it's shift In weird patterns, shift down and up ramdomly is there something I'm missing there's no way my tranny went out while it was sitting over night:argh:

Some shavings in the pan but haven't changed it in a long time, nothing bad though, what else should I try?

TPS?

Tanner Green 11-09-2013 10:32 PM

Where's the TPS at on my 97 2500 cummins?

JBearSVT 11-09-2013 11:20 PM

I'm not sure if it's in the same place it is on my '98, but I think so. Regardless, if you're under the hood looking for the easiest place to rev the engine up from, the belcrank for the TPS is probably the thing you'll end up grabbing. Not great pictures of where it is, but this page will give you pretty good pictures of what you're looking for: Dodge diesel maintenance tips
and also one way to test it/milk it along if it's out of spec. Just scroll down to "Throttle position sensor adjustment and cleaning".
