Ideas For Better Fuel Mileage?

I am buying a 2005 GMC 4wd CC and I am wondering what all I can do to improve my gas mileage. My knowledge of diesel trucks is next to none. So if you have an idea please explain what it is and does. Also I'd rather it be something i can easily install myself. I have never worked on a car but I need to learn so I can do alot of my own work on my truck. Cuz I do NOT want to have to take my car in to a shop or pay someone to fix stuff for me.

Thanks!

I'd start off with the air intake for the ease of installing it. I haven't put one on my truck yet, but have put them on plenty others. It will slightly improve hp, torque and gas mileage. Take you maybe 30 min to install with no experience. If you can afford it you can put a programmer on it. I have also not installed one on my truck yet due to the $, but I believe you just plug it right in to a plug and go. That's would be a huge gain in gas mileage if you have the right programmer and drive it right. There's so many things you can do. but those two or simple. I'm sure you'll get some more suggestions too.

you can post in the price quote forum here and it will send a PM to ALL the sponsors here and they can get you a price on one. :5: they should be able to get you intake prices and programmer pricing for you.

i'm not too familliar on the d-max trucks but would a good aftermarket exhaust help MPG like it does on the Powerstrokes and Cummins trucks?

How much is the programmer your buying? You may consider going with something like the edge w/ attitude. It's spendy though, I think like $750ish. But it has a display screen that will show you EGT'S, boost pressure, oil pressure, etc. I think it has several things it can display and it allows you to display 4 of your choice at a time. Pretty sweet. There's other chips that do this also. I think that's what I'll do when I get a chip that way I don't have to run several guages.

I mean yeah alot of them sayyy they do.... but I have no idea for sure.

And the programmer I am lookin at is the PPE Xcelerator Standard. And I like it better cuz I can get more power out of it :rocking: But yeah it's gonna cost me like $662 for the programmer, pillar mount, boost gauge, and trans. temp gauge. (add $204 for pyrometer gauge)

With the edge on level 6, you'd get 150hp/350fpt. 10 less hp, but 100 more ft pounds of torque. That's crazy! Plus you can monitor all of these...
• Boost
• EGT
• Barametric PSI
• Speed MPH
• Engine Coolant Temperature
• Gear
• Intake Air Temperature
• Load%
• Slip %
• Transmission Temperature
• Throttle%
• Turbo Boost PSI
• RPM
• Backdown

Lol yeah i know what it shows. I got a friend with pretty much the same truck i'm gettin and he has one. but... i'd rather have the PPE and I like the look of the gauges. But it makes me mad that they dont have the PPE turbo increase valve for the LLY :madd:

Honestly on the DMAX trucks, a trans temp gauge isnt really necessary. The factory gauge is quite accurate. The PPE is my fav programmer next to EFI live of course. But when it comes to plug & Play Programmers, IMO you cant go wrong with the PPE.

For Exhausts, I got my 4" Downpipe back MBRP with 5" tip from a vendor here on DieselBombers and it made alot more difference in lowering my egt's and helping fuel economy than I thought it would. Dont buy a cold air intake. The donaldson filters in the Duramax trucks flow and filter far more superior than aftermarket filters. And its good to about 550-600 RWHP. Here is a write up on the filter test https://www.dieselbombers.com/durama...r-testing.html

So by saving money on a trans temp gauge, and cold air intake, it narrows it down to exhaust programmer, and gauges.. There is a different mount for gauges besides the a-pillar. I will see if I can find the writeup on it.. you can mount them in the overhead console above the rear view mirror.

I would post here and ask for a price request on EGT and 35 or 60 psi boost gauge and see if the vendors can find an overhead mount for ya, just to give you options  Here is the price quote request link bud..

Hope that helps ya some!

IMO the price that you are going to pay for the the goodies you are looking at it is going to take a long time to recover the cost. If you are doing these just for economy save the money as none of those make a HUGE difference.

As 2500 said the CAI is only for looks and a louder turbo which the LLY is very quiet.
