LB7 intake box mod
3 Attachment(s)
To take off the stock air box loosen the two hose clamps on the intake tube on each end. a 5/16 or flat head screw driver would work fine.
Disconnect the MAF sensor ontop of the airbox and yank on the box upwards to remove it, its pressed in to fit there no bolts holding the box down. Once you have it out you can start cutting it up to let the air flow a little easier. Heres some pics of my modded air box on my 01 duramax. I took a grinder wheel and started to make swiss cheese out of my stock air box. I cut two sections out the front of the box so the air can ram in from behind the light. Attachment 56498 and i got a little carried away and went ahead and removed the old intake slots that go to the fender: Attachment 56499 Overall this is how it looks. Attachment 56500 |
Nice Writeup Dano! The LB7 Box looks alot different than the LBZ box from these pictures..
 |
sure does, I don't think you absolutely need the two holes on the front, just the big one cut out should be enough for the air to move in. the things on the fender side can be left alone, but this is what i did. :U:
|
Actually do NOT remove the slots going to the fender. This aids in flow direction and CFM. The LBZ system is what Txchristopher designed and GM stole since he didnt patent it so you can thank him for the lowered IAT and EGT's. :pca1:

Good write up Danny:U:
|
did you notice a big difference with the modded box?
|
compared to my afe stage 2, i feel like i have more top end with the stock modded box
|
what filter are you running with that danny?:humm:
|
Stock filter! :U: They are good for about 500-550 RWHP:pca1:

Sweet setup.
Any other suggestions for cheap mods? I saw in the Cummins section they used a PVC pipe intake that gives a sweet whistling sound, any suggestions for the LB7 to get a nice whistle from the turbo? |

No gauges yet, but that reminds me....
BEFORE I do the engine mods, I should get that done first! |

Pull off the resonator box and plug the tube going into it. Make sure to use a lock nut or locktite to keep that damn thing in there right, dont want that plug/wing nut/washer falling loose then shove the resonator box back on and tighten the clamp back up. As long as you have a straight pipe this sounds f'ing SICK!!!! The spool up is nice but the lb7's stop roaring soon as you let off the throttle so the whistle lasts a while and sounds WAY better than any other engine. Geoff |
modded intake horn helps too :)

YEah, but I suck with a grinder.... and not willing to f*%k the horn up. Although I think there is a guy on another forum that will do a swap for the stock with a modded horn for a few bucks.... Nice little side job to make a few bucks...
Geoff i got mine from superdiesel ;) |

Get a 2" test plug from the hardware store.

That intake air horn mod was seriously one of the best cheap mods I've done. I've had so many people ask me what kind of turbo (aftermarket) I was running :5:
|
really is it that much louder?

kinda more sound you get with the horn plus turbo whine. kinda wish i didnt sell my afe cause it was loud aa hell with the afe before i switched back to stock. |
Is there a custom intake tube available like the ones for the Afe intakes that still hooks to the stock air filter? I like the stock filtration system, but I want some mad turbo whistle.
The plug idea is alright, but it's incredibly dry where I live, and the temp goes from 32-65 regularly, so I'm worried about it cracking and falling apart. |

Definantly more louder. However I have an open element K&N which probably helps. The turbo noise seriously echos off walls and buildings now plus low boost (<10psi) is maybe two times louder. I didn't believe it at all but everyone that rides in my truck with the windows down always mentions something.
i almost forgot how it sounds like its been too long :argh: |
hows it coming almost got it done? I'm starting to know how it feels, they havent even ordered parts for mine yet. :argh:
I'm going to have to get this done though maybe i'll steal the horn of it while its sitting at the dealer :humm: |
danny what does the ball valve do if i can ask:humm:
|
you can use a ball valve on the wasegate line to restrict the flow of air to make the wastegate open later. you dont want to shut it 100% cause then you will overspeed your turbo

|
corrrect me if im wrong but turbo overspeed can cause huge destruction like metal chunks flying everywhere especially into your engine :booo:
|
Yeah...overspeeding a turbo is not good. Eventually, it will explode.
|
yup no bueno, need a gauge for that, and possibly a DP gauge too
|
Did this to mine, had a .3 to .4 difference in quarter mile time :tu:
