Default Diesel Performance in Aus

Hi Guys, i dont know where to put this thread. Im from australia and i have a toyota hilux 4cyl turbo, which compared to the rigs you get in US is more like a kids toy. However it is a diesel all the same and i would LOVE to roll some coal in AUS. I have read some threads on here about it and from what i can tell its purely in the tune of the engine? as in running it 'rich' in diesel which causes high EGTs. But all the high performance diesel trucks i have seen in videos and such pump out the black smoke, so how is it these rigs can run that rich without having their pistons melt? Anyway, any help you can offer thats not 'put a plastic bag over the intake' would be much appreciated. it runs a mechanical/hybrid injector pump, pre common rail.
Cheers
