Default Found a Cummins 5.9L on craiglist... Need advice

Hi All,

I am hoping to begin a diesel build pretty soon, although I will admit I'm fairly inexperienced when it comes to this stuff... I've always been fairly handy, but haven't worked on trucks much. That being said, I'm not afraid, have been doing my homework/research, and am going to start pretty soon, I just have a few more questions before I begin buying parts.

I generally like simple... the less fancy electronics and flash, the better. So for that reason I have decided to find a good 1977-79 Ford F250, and swap in a Cummins 5.9L 12v with a manual tranny. My goal would one day be to achieve somewhere in the 400-500 HP range, but for now I'd just be happy to have a diesel to drive.

I found a good candidate for the truck, and I'm working on a sale now. As far as the engine and tranny I am still working on it. I did find this Cummins on craigslist, and wanted to know if you guys thought it was a good starting point or not. He didn't have a price for everything, just individual prices, but it seems like a lot of goodies, most of them new. The engine itself came out of a running dodge with over 200k miles, and he wasn't sure if it had the original Killer Dowel Pin or not.

This is what he listed in the ad...

"p7100 pump I.D. numbers 402 736 838 $450
off a 96 cummins 12v was running when motor was taken out

Mountain high diesel performance over sized valves and valve seats 400$
(flows 22% more air over factory in stock applications)

Hamilton extreme duty push rods 750hp and over 350$

titanium 10 degree hd retainers and keepers 350$

60lbs intake and exhaust valve springs 120$

everything is new in packaging still and is all high quality produces, everything you will need top end to turn 5000rpms and will easily hold over 1000hp!"

Still waiting on what he wants for everything... what would you think is a reasonable price?

Ok, so are you building a streetable daily driven cummins making anywhere between 350/800 to 500/1100? Or are you building a serious speed machine meant mainly for the track/sled making 900+/1600+?

Stock Cummins Shortblock rebuilt+core- $3200
Capable of holding upwards of 650rwhp STOCK.

Custom built blueprinted Cummins Shortblock- $5500? 6500?

And all the accessories only go up from there. If all you want is a streetable Fummins making big power in a daily driven setup, keep it simple.

Google is your best friend, go to her, use her.

everything he has listed seems it is more for a pull truck and would not be ideal for what you are looking for. best bet would be to find a rusted out 12v and buy it cheap, it will give you motor and trans for what you would pay usually for just a motor. good luck

I agree completely, but this threw me off..

"My goal would one day be to achieve somewhere in the 400-500 HP range, but for now I'd just be happy to have a diesel to drive."

Then he lists all this stuff...
