2013 SEMA Cruise: The Friday Night Exodus

Enough show-n-shine, it’s time to roll! While Monday through Friday at the 2013 SEMA Show had resulted in seeing a ton of cool custom vehicles, a nagging set of questions only intensified by the end of the week. Yes, these vehicles looked good, but did they run? Did they drive? How did they sound? How did they look driving? With this in mind, we had restlessly looked forward to 4PM Friday afternoon for the close of the show and the start of the Cruise. What is the Cruise? The SEMA Show had tons and tons of vehicles that all needed to leave the premise at the close of the show. Over the years, this mass exodus of such an eclectic collection of vehicles had attracted more attention and more of a crowd. Soon, an official SEMA Cruise was established to somewhat orderly parade the vehicles out into the streets of Las Vegas.

You can imagine that the few sets of bleachers set up at the focal point of the cruise route could not support the thousands upon thousands of people vying for prime viewing real estate. Sections of the street were five deep in cell-phone clad enthusiasts (and innocent bystanders) from all over the world.

Part of the beauty of the Cruise, and what we’ve tried to depict, is the variety of “vehicles” that cruised out of the SEMA Show Friday night for a solid hour and a half. To narrow it down to a specific genre would detract from part of the cruise’s appeal; you just never knew what was coming next. A Toyota Tundra would be followed by a built Camaro, then a rat rod, then a Jeep, then a… race truck, slammed dually, ice cream truck, race car, exotic car, rice rocket, classic truck, rock crawler, diesel truck, mini truck, gasser, Pike’s Peak semi-truck, monster truck, drag truck, and so on. If you can imagine it, it probably had to leave SEMA at some point. Drivers and passengers recorded the Cruise from inside their vehicles, and spectators took tons of pictures and videos from the street corners.

What can be more astonishing than a Cruise that can make Big Foot on the street look ordinary? All in all, the Cruise is arguably the most memorable and exciting time of the SEMA Show.
