Been a long time since ive been on this forum. My truck listed below is long gone and im on my new build. Heres a little about it!

I own a towing and repair shop in northern CA. I would like to introduce you guys to my HUGE project build that is being built to win shows and drive and be magazine worthy. As of right now i am 15 months into the build and have done all work to perfection. I am going to try and break it into sections and explain where i went with everything. As of now, the truck has been fully assembled (ugly of course) to test all operating systems and make sure everything works. At this point it is being prettied up and reassembled for final assembly. So where to start!!!

Truck will be turned into a 1969 front end with full body and paint. 700+ HP common rail engine on a 2010 f350 4x4 chassis, 8" lift on 40's. Custom interior and sound system, fully powder coated chassis. And it will have all of the creature comforts. A/C, Power windows, hydroboost, 4 corner discs. Working cruise control and anti-lock brakes (that was a task on its own), and everything else you can imagine.

So i started with this truck right here. It is a 1968 chevy k20. I bought it as the donor truck. (so far the only piece of the original truck being used is the glove box door and ash tray!

So first i started with trying to fit the engine and trans and get a modern suspension underneath it. i wanted coil springs and ABS and 4x4. so i bought a bunch of heim joints and brackets and tubing a bought a front kingpin dana 60. After looking more and more at it, and seeing what it would cost to put knuckles and abs tone rings in it, i decided to go with a new direction. I bought matching front and rear f350 axles out of a 2010 f350 4x4. and started to mount them to the frame using factory ford coils for a stock type ride.

So i got the rear axle mocked up. I bought a rear section of a ford frame and stole the front hangers and ran a shackle flip in the rear to get my height i was seeking. Got the frame all sandblasted for easily welding. and got the rear axle all mounted.

After all of this work i tried mountaing a steering box to figure out steering. Well if you know the old chevys, 1968 ran a steering box outside of the frame rail, making the steering system about impossible. Then i tried to fit the motor, it was just too big and heavy and had problem after problem after problem. I was also going to have to brake and box the frame to handle the power. So after thinking about it, I already have running gear from a 2010 f350. Why not just get the frame and make it bolt up, so I went out and got a 2010 f350 diesel 4x4 frame (single cab long bed). Next was making the body fit the frame. The frame was 11.75" too long so shortening it was a must.

I didnt take as many pictures as i would have liked throught the process but i will post what i can get. Here is a picture of the floor pans after a few coats of lizard skin with the dodge seats in there.

in the last picture, you can see where i started partial body work on the firewall (firewall is completely custom and took over a month to do). The firewall had to be completely customer fitted. It had to have inside clearance to the pedals, clearanced in the engine bay for engine and exhaust, and clearances to clear a radio and the internal part of the a/c box assembly.

Here you can see what the firewall looks like before final bodywork.

At this time i had all of the systems functional and the truck ran well. I will go more into the technical side of integrating system components later. At this point it was ready for tear down to start making things look pretty.

I had to shorten the cab just under a foot, but i had to extend it 8" in the rear to make the bumper line up and build the last bed support bracket.

 

After all of the metal work was finished welded and some of it ground clean, axles stripped down etc, it went off to powdercoat. After it returned, every single bushing, seal, bearing etc, is Brand new. Not a single reused part. Came out pretty good to get it back to a rolling chassis again

And the rolling chassis is finished! basically all just stock ford modern running gear with the exception of a fabtech 8" lift. Next comes up the tear down of the engine to get sent off to the machine shop. the donor engine had 390K miles on it. When you see the bearings and pistons its pretty impressive how good of shape this thing was in still.

Off to the machine shop it goes!

 

Next up comes to body work. Getting started on it while the engine is at the machine shop. In the pictures it looks like there is alot of body filler. Nowhere on the truck is it more than 3/16" thick at the very most. I dont have a sheetmetal shop and did it all with a plasma, a torch, a welder, grinder, and a hammer. came out pretty good. Also had to replace the rockers, cab corners, floor pans, and a bunch of other spots due to rust. the driver side of the firewall had to be pushed out 4" so that the pedals were comfortable and the steering wheel wouldnt hit you in the chest.

As of right now ive been doing alot of bodywork so there isnt alot of pictures to show. But the cab and doors and fenders have been together and disassembled numerous times to make sure gaps and whatnot as perfect. its been block, prime, block prime, over and over to get it perfect. but as i was finishing up bodywork today, this little gem showed up:

so tomorrow morning we will start assembling the engine and i will post pics as i go. The engine is bored .020 over, block is decked. Head is fully rebuilt and has 110lb hamilton valve springs. Hamilton cam with HD pushrods and tappets. new pistons, polished crank and reconditioned rods. This is as far as i got tonight so tomorrow i will post some more pictures of the engine build!

I will also work on getting some more things listed tomorrow like the technial/engineering aspects of the swap and the troubles i ran into. if you have any questions fire away!

After i paint the block in the morning, I will be taking off the pan and timing cover and cleaning them up and painting them back to factory black. Then i will be ordering a new valve cover that says cummins instead of dodge and be getting it back into the truck as soon as the paint and body are done. i will post pictures tomorrow after its painted
