Default 6.7 Ram with loss of power after overheard code

I know this problem has been posted before but none of the post I can find match my problem or the fixes have yet to work that have worked for others.

Okay first off my 07 2500 Mega Cab with the 6.7 and about 190k miles. I have a DPF and EGR delete that I use as my daily driver. Not done anything out of the norm for my truck before this started.

About a week ago while driving to work I noticed the over head console popped up with a message saying to “See Dealer Now Service Required” No check engine light tho. The truck drove fine so got to work and parked it till I got off work the next morning on the way home I remember the problem from the day prior but this day not problem. Thought it just worked itself out so I went on with life. Later the day the code appeared again but still with no check engine light. After cutting the truck off the problem seems to correct itself for a little while then cuts back on. Tried the pressing the gas pedal 6 times with the key in the on position a few times with no luck of stopping the problem. Yesterday removed the program with my Smarty JR. and reloaded it. Everything worked till today on my way to work again it has come on again.

When the code does appear I lose power during takeoff or accelerating at speed, Irise in RPM’s and it puts out a large amount of thick black smoke which is not normal on my truck. One other thing I have noticed it that my fuel mileage has fallen about 5 Mpg.

I have run my truck in both hot days and cooler morning, on short trips and longer ones along with cutting the exhaust brake on and off. Sometimes the code appears other times it does not.

I don’t know where to look or what to try next.

Thanks for the advice.

I'm wondering something. You probably already know this. But when you did your dpf delete, Is your smarty jr. Able to fool the ecm into thinking the dpf is still on. What i mean is you would need a certain programmer to fool the ecm when the dpf delete is done. Because it sounds like your consol is saying the dpf is needing removal and cleaning thinking the dpf is still on your truck.

When I bought the truck 2 Yrs ago the DPF was already removed by the seller. Right away I bought the Smarty Jr. to keep the truck from going into limp mood. The truck has only done this once before about a year ago and I was able to fix or stop the code by the gas pedal push method and it has run fine since.
I dont know if that would be be cuased by the Smarty Jr. not fooling the ECM or not.

I just found a site showing an recall from 2010 for a ECM repair/update.
"Chrysler is voluntarily recalling 186,099 2007-09 Dodge Ram 2500 and 3500 Heavy Duty pickup trucks equipped with 6.7-liter Cummins diesel engines to fix an issue that could cause the check engine light to illuminate or, under certain conditions, cause the engine to produce heavy levels of soot that could damage the turbocharger, exhaust gas recirculation valve and diesel particulate filter and result in increased emissions.

To fix the problem, Chrysler dealers will update the software in the engine control module. The free ECM reflash takes about a half-hour to complete."

I called the number and my truck was never updated. I called the dealer an even though my truck has the DPF and EGR deletes they will still do the updates for me.
This may solve the problem yet again it may cause another with the Smarty JR not being able to fool the ECM after it has been reprogramed. Like it should or maybe was doing.
Link for the recall I found.

Even though you see no check engine light doesnt mean there is no code. There are like 10 computers on that truck and not all will show the check engine light. If you have a friend with a computer i would have them scan it as well to see if there is a problem lingering as well as maybe the reflash mentioned above. Your smarty will or should read codes but wont access all computers like some of the scanners will like a snapon solus ultraor tech 2.
