Sad No sensor ground in Data Link Connector

I was driving along when the engine stalled and would not restart. I towed it home and put the scanner on it . No connection would come up . I checked the I checked the voltage across the number 5 pin and 16 pin and nothing.across the 4 and 16 11+ volts. so no sensor ground!
I did a series of tests Test NTC-3A checking power and ground circuits on the fire wall mounted PCM all checked good. Tomorrow I will remove the fuel filter cannister to get to the engine mounted ecm and check for continuity between pin 4 on ECM connector and Pin 5 on the Data link connector.I am hoping for an open but suspect I may be changing an ecm which is apparently costly. All the fuses in the PCM showed continuity. any suggestions am I on the right track. I bought this on Ebay and almost made it home .172000 miles on it. The fuel injection pump is marked rebuilt but it was installed with only 2 nuts. I will have to clean the mess and find some leaks as there is oil on that side of engine block a undercarriage. I thought the cummings 5.9 24 valve tobe the most reliable. If the crank sensor went out would it effect the DLC sensor ground?
