Bang and no rwd.
Hey guys, i havent posted here before but i thought maybie you guys could lend a hand.
I have a 95 dodge 3500 ram with the 12v cummins mated to a 47rh with an np241hd dually.
I recently rebuilt the whole overdrive housing and transfercase. i took off from a stop light quickly with nothing in the bed. And just as i was taking off i heard a BANG! and the truck felt like it was in neutral. if i were to give it throttle, the rpms would climb and the speedo would register according to the rpm's. But the truck wouldnt go anywhere, also its not making any crunching noises, screeching nothing. Nice and quiet.
So i put it in 4wdH and drove it home on the front wheels dragging me along. This is my only mode of transportation as well. Sometimes if i put the truck in 2WH it will "catch" and go foward, but only about 20 feet or so before going back into neutral.
Is it ok to drive for about a week with the 4wdH engaged? or do you think damage will occur while doing this. only about 10 miles a day to and from work.
Thanks.

Sounds like you exploded the spider gears in the rear end, pull the rear cover off and see if whats left of the gears is laying in the bottom of the housing, remove the rest of the pieces and put new fluid in and drive in front wheel drive to you can fix it. It is important to get the junk out of there so it doesn't bind up and break something.

I think my friend checked to make sure the driveline was turning when i was under the vehicle in drive. The driveline wasnt turning while this happened and the spedo still raised and the rpm's went up. i think i have a clutch type LSD rear end according to the tag on the back. Ill take the cover off and make sure anyways.

Ended up pulling out the driveshaft and this came out with it.
Looks like the mainshaft snapped right off at where the snapring groove is. And now im assuming because of the snapring missing, the mainshaft has gone farther inside the case and is the chain is eating away at the case so i shouldnt be driving this.
Ive read a few posts from other members about how there mainshafts were bent, and broke the rear tailshaft housing on the transfer case. I had the same problem, rear tailshaft housing was broken and im guessing the mainshaft was bent. I thought that it was hard to put the driveshaft in but figured it was because of new bushings i put in the housing. And i had a high speed vibration real bad, but i assumed that was the driveline out of balance since i put new u-joints in it and was going to get the driveshaft balanced the same day it broke.
Sorry for the large pics.
