Hey guy im looking to buy a duramax but i want to know what they are like before i go on the shop. Im going to get a crew cab short box so the family can ride with me. i would like to know some of the specs on them and how they handle the upgrades you guys have used. i dont want to do much to it. Like a lift, wheels/tires, gauges and a chip. What would be the best thing to do.

x2 On what Danny said.. The defferent generations of the duramax all have differnet things about them, just like with the Fords and Dodges.. 1st Gen Duramax's (LB7) were from 01-04.5. The Auto trans in them is the 5 spd Allison. The LB7's had a few little issues, but most were covered by a 200k mile warranty.
The LLY 04.5-06 2nd Generation Dmax, was a slight upgrade in power from the factory. They are a great truck, and a few of them even had the 6spd Allison, of a ZF-6 manual trans, or the 5 spd Allison.
Then the 3rd gen 06-07.5 (LBZ) is a great all around truck IMO. But of course Im biased because thats what Ive got. With just a PPE and a shift kit & exhaust, they can lay down over 400 RWHP. They have the 6spd Allison, and a few (very hard to find) had the ZF-6 manual trans. A few of these trucks had some EGR issues, but again, covered by a warranty.
Then of course the new 4th gens (LMM). I dont think there is any known issues as of yet, except of course the DPF. But thats on ALL new trucks.
Whichever way you go, its not hard to have a SOLID 400+ RWHP truck for under $1000 worth of BOMBING. Tie Rod Sleeves, Decent Programmer, exhaust, and modify the stock intake.
Let us know when you find a particular year, and Im sure we can help you spend your money..

Cant really go wrong with a PPE programmer. If you think you NEED on the fly adjustability (which the Allison DOES NOT like) I would use and Edge Juice with attitude. As long as you arent trying to make over about 500-550 RWHP, the stock airbox and filter is all you need. You can modify them to increase flow, and still keep the awesome filtration of the stock filter.
A transgo jr shift kit for the 6 spd allison is a must. They oughta come in there stock. Gauges are a must of course, especially when pulling a load if you have anything over a stock Tune. But then gauges are not necessary if you run the Edge Juice with Attitude.
You can get all of these items, and a set of tie rod sleeves, and a 4" exhaust from our vendors at a great price!
