I Have a 98.5 24valve that is essentially all stock, Just rebuilt the cummins so it's fresh with about 2k on her of break in time, I wanna build it into a mean street machine and make some mad power out of it. Where should I start? Programer, studs, ported head, hot vp44 pump, turbo? It is a manual with a south bend heavy duty 13'' ceramic clutch and pressure plate the only thing I have done to it so far is an kore performance track bar to prevent death wobble and an AIR DOG 150gph pump and kit, the lift pump went out and I know the stock ones suck so I decided to put one on that would make it ready to build and not have to replace with something bigger and better on down the road and spend my money twice, thats the only thing I really don't want to do is have to buy the same part two or three times to keep upgrading for more power. any and all suggestions are welcomed and appreciated. thank you and i look forward to your advice.

If your wanting good power I would p-pump her and be done with it by the time you buy the big vp-44, the programmer etc might as well just have all the fuel you need without the need for electronic injection pumps.... but if you want to keep the vp I would say first you need to decide how much hp you want. I would say first thing is gauges or a programmer with gauges like the quadzilla adrenaline or edge juice with attitude and you will need a fuel pressure gauge no matter what you may have the pump but you want to know what your making, I would wait on doing exhaust because you will most likely be getting a bigger turbo and need the hx 40 down pipe if you want more streetible power a set of twins, and you could save a little time by not having to cut up a exhaust system you just put on. Big power means injectors too and that depends on turbos etc. the possibilities are endless...

a cold air intake is good but if you go with a set of twins your wasting some money there as you only need the filter

 

Which is a better programmer to go with the quadzilla or the edge? I hade the edge on my 99 powerstroke and wasn't all that happy with it beacsue it made the throttle super weird and sometimes un responsive and went throught three brain's on it before I finally got one that worked right in the truck but I've never been around the quadzilla's or even rode in a truck with one. I had a friend put the Juiced with attitude in his 99 24 valve and it didn't seem to make that much difference.The other thought that I was having was going with a set of maual gauges and then doing like a smarty programmer? which do you guys think is the better route in the end cause I want to make some big power kinda in the 700 range which I understand takes all new internals but that's at least a year or so down the road before I get that crazy with it. I'd like to be in the 5's this summer though.

 

I've got the Quadzilla Adrenaline on my '99 and I love it. With custom tuning, easy USB updates and great customer service, the ADR really whips the Juice w/Attitude IMO. Either one you could stack with a Smarty. But I think you would see a bigger HP increase with the Adrenaline or Juice then you would with just a Smarty.

 

700 is very possible on stock internals, but oring it, stud it, and a good size set of twins and some big sticks will be needed. better get the better shaft in your tranny and make sure 5th gear is taken care of

the smarty is a bottom end chip, my edge on 5 is making 160hp more to the rears than what it makes on 0. I tested this on sat. But the quad is supposed to make 180 so might as well go that way but you still have to get a fuel pressure gauge with it

 

First decide on your power goals.... 400hp? 450hp? and what you use your truck for. Towing, Fun, Sled Puller or a little of each and build it accordingly.

I think his goal is 700 hp and thats going to take a lot with the vp. So if your going to do twins start by getting your top turbo to run as a single till you have the money for both. to make 500 hp I am guessing that you could do it with some 150hp injectors a s300 or similar turbo and the edge or quad box. as right now I am at 403 with the s300 some 40hp injectors and the edge. But to get from 500 to 700 I am going to say bigger sticks like some 250's and a big bottom turbo. I am guess that maybe on the 99 you were talking about it could have been that he didn't tap the pump wire or maybe had poor fuel pressure as I can tell a big difference in mine with it set on 0 or 3 or 5. But the quad seems the way to go for big numbers and you need the pulse to be able to update and custom tune anyway. So really the only mechanical gauge you should need would be the fuel pressure.

 

Ya that is the one thing I like about the edge juiced with attitude is the fact that it comes with a fuel psi sensor and display in it. I'm thinkin I'm gonna stud it next with some good studs but I'm gonna have to figure out who makes a really good set so any suggestions there would be great, and a friend of mine has a michine shop and a flow bench so I talked to him about porting my head and doing 60lb. springs to it and all the freshening up it needs including new valves, guides, and seals. He said he usually does it for about 5 so I didn't think that was bad at all for a fresh head that's ported and trued. I was looking at High Tech's turbos and was kinda diggin on thier 64mm big boy so I can upgrade to thier 66mm a little later on and not out grow my turbo so quickly. but one of you mentioned an s300 turbo? no what exactly is that and who is dealing those? i'm assuming that it's still a T-4 flange for stock bolt on and I know you can use it in a twins setup if I buy the mountin bracket and hot pipe and all tose fun things. Finnaly I was wondering if the quadzilla adrenalin adds timing along with fuel to the engine or if it just adds fuel to the mixture like the edge does.

 

the adrenaline adds both, but id steer clear of them, toooo many issues, every single one of my buddies that i run with locally have either gotten rid or are in the process of getting rid of it for all of its issues, go with the edge juice with attitude, very good products, been running it 2 yrs, not a single problem plus they have great service if you ever needed it.
