Default Average cost to rebuild cummins?

As some of you may know, i recently "burned up" my "turned up" (ya I know.. lame joke. Gotta make light of the situation somehow) cummins. Was driving, turned the radio down a bit, heard it clanking like crazy. Pulled into parkinglot, noticed clanking fluctuated with revs, but still had excellent throttle response. Turned around to head home, a few miles from home the truck would idle at 500rpms, NO power, and the clanking could be heard for what I presume to be blocks.
The truck still starts up at the drop of a hat, idles at 500 but clanks. I'm thinking dropped valve, crank bearing, or perhaps a shot injector. Truck has 268k miles on stock injectors.

So what kinda damage may be done? Is it worth it to rebuild the motor with badass parts? (good cam and everything else)? How much is the average "f-up-cummins" rebuild going for in the shop? I dont have the time or tools to do it on my own

Matt

I cant find where the cost for pistons/crank/rings/cam etc all are. Maybe I'll look again.

But seriously. It's not like there is any other action going on in here. Just trying to get all 12 of these viewing diesel-bombers occupied!

Is that with machine work? Maybe redoing the cylinders etc? Is that for a FULL rebuild or just top end/bottom end or what?

apparently you dont know much about rebuilding engines. you need machine work EVERY time you rebuild an engine to do it the right way. you at least need to have it cleaned and magnafluxed to have it checked for warpage or cracks, and at the very minimum get the cylinders honed out. if you take your stock block and just throw new pistons in it you shouldnt be touching a motor in the first place

I wont be touching my motor. Thats why I'm asking about prices and machine work etc. So that 4500-5000 includes basic motor machine work?

it al depends on what wrong with the motor. if the block and head is messed up ur looking at more than 4-5k. u said u were wanting to build a badass motor with a different cam and pistons from what i was gathering from ur post. if so ur looking at even more for the aftermarket parts.

Tidewatermachine has balanced and blueprinted long blocks for $3000, shipping included. This is for an high quality engine that's built by people that do it right, not by someone who's just going to through a rebuild kit in it for the same money.
