Easiest is probably goin to a junk yard and finding a wrecked dually, swapping the axles and if the beds' good, use it too.
You wanting a shortbed? There has been a few in DieselPower Magazine that have used mega cab dually beds, look pretty cool.
I'm pretty sure 01 and a half and up year models have disc brakes, so there's one prob fixed.
The rear axle you'll need/use will most likely be a Dana 80, the stock axle. I'm almost 100% positive it's a simple swap out process but I could be wrong.

Good Luck and

i just changed my front axle. i was told 3/4 and one ton fronts were the same. they are both 60's and the dually has adapters. when i went to put on the adapters they did not fit the hub. the center of the hub on the rotor was too big. i changed out my hubs wheel bearings and all. was that a short bed in the pic? i have a reg. cab and im goin to put on a quad cab. i am keeping it a dually. i wasnt all the way sure if i could use a shortbed or if i was going to have to make a special sized flat bed.

Default 2001ram2500 srw to drw dually conversion...

elalr, yes the pics were of a shortbed.

"rebal" from (Dodge Diesel - Diesel Truck Resource - Cummins - Home) posted these specs and measurements.

reb seems to be knowledgeable about the dana 80 dually axles.

ok hear are some measurments for you
center to center of springs on a CC axle are 43.25" .inside to inside spring bushings 40". backing plate to backing plate (drum brake Dana 80) is 49" from center of sping bushing to center is 59" long .it looks like you can just put dually 16" on a Dana 80 3/4 ton and it will fit ,if you have drums. I tried it with disc and wheel hits the caliper so with disc you need 17" wheels hope that helps

some picture to help you out. the first pick is the one from above. and the second pickis from my 2001 3500. if you look the inside dual wheel is real close to the leaf spring on your pic. I am even running wider tires on my rig and still over 8" away from the spring. If you want to do the sway let me know. I am Going SRW on my truck. so we may be able to workout a switch. best of luck...

You could always just get spacers, front adapters, a dually bed or fenders, wheels and tires. That would save you a bunch of hassle swapping out axles. Arrowtech makes decent spacers, or you could get a set off E-bay. When I converted my 07; I kept the front the same and got spacers, a mega cab dually bed, wheels and tires for the rear. You have to carry two spares, but again it saves a lot of work.

i have a dana 80 housing (from a 2001 3500 pickup) that i just bought to replace the one i have in my 2002 cab and chassis but it wont work on my rig if you are trying to change over from single wheel drv to a dually and you have a reg dually PICKUP not a cab and chassis this axle housing will work, ( the cab and chassis rear ends are shorter width wise than a regular pickup dually ) thats why the pics in the previous posts are so close to the springs , dana 80 rear end were used in all ram 3500 and 2500 with cert. engines (v-10 cummins etc...) this axle housing was in a 3500 w/cummins will have to get the guts for it though has one axle shaft and one hub (it was a parts rearend when i bought it ) will sell for what i bought it for : $300.00 spend another 2-300.00 to rebuild and you have a very good rearend cheap, a used one frm junk yrd $1500.00 and ya have to rebuild it to trust it a rebuilt one all ready to go can go between $2000.00/$2500.00 also will be willing to trade for a dana 80 housing for a cab and chassis
that will fit a 2002 ram 3500 c&ch. iam havin a real hard time finding one
