fuel pump ?
My 2001 cummins ran out of fuel (I believe) on a steep uphill/grade....or at least the pick up line couldn't reach the fuel...check gages and engine light came on. Tried to bleed injectors-they were dry when I cracked them got minimal fuel out of them eventually. But truck just won't turn over, never burped or coughed at all. Fuel didn't squirt out of injectors so seems low on pressure. Could this be fuel lift pump? Maybe something in glow plugs as the wait to start light takes quite a while to shut off now...any suggestions???

Well Cummins don't have glow plugs they use a grid heater to warm up the intake temps. Did you run out of fuel in the tank? If so have you put in fuel then tried to prime the system again? The stock LPs are horrible on these trucks and go out all the time. So it could very well be a bad LP. Have you done the key trick to check for codes?

Yes, fuel gauge said I had a quarter tank but I've had the fuel gauge problem in the past so figured same story again. I added 5 gallons to the tank, cracked injectors, they were dry...eventually got fuel but not alot...still won't turn over or burp at all....never knew about key trick for codes...will this also work on an '01?

i have a good friend who also has an 01 24 valve. about two months ago his truck did the same thing. found out his lift pump went bad a couple miles before the truck went dead and it ended up burning up the injector pump. i think he said after it was all said and done he had to dish out 3,300 bucks. it was a certified cummins tech that did the work so he trusted his decision.

I ran mine out of fuel the first time my fuel gauge read wrong. It took a long time to get fuel to the injectors but once it did I closed em off as fuel was coming out and then it took a few minutes of cranking before she fired and I found out that my lift pump was weak and had to replace it.

its a big pain to get these trucks to go sometimes, I got fuel to my truck and had to sit on the starter for a while till it started to go on its own... The key trick should work on your 01, my buddies o1 would not start because of a bad lift pump, it had pressure but would not let the truck run... but if you dont believe its the lift pump and fear a bad injection pump something ive done and I know its a NO, NO! to some people but take ether and be conservative but run the truck off it for a couple of seconds of no start bad Inj Pump. Just make sure your wait to start is off and give it a half a minute before you spary ether in there or youll have no more eyebrows! but dont use to much because ether is hard on piston rings but a little is not gonna hurt you...

Yea making sure you close them will be helpful because if they are open your just pushing diesel onto the engine and not to the injectors..

Thanks for inuput....yeah, had fuel but not alot of pressure..cranked em down as soon as I had fuel. Just doesn't even want to cough at all..Thought about the ether but didn't want to throw a rod..got scared..Did the key trick and got code P1693-General fault indicating a fault in the bus or PCM/ECM interface...anybody have an idea what that means?? Thinking injector pump and/or transfer pump...??
