The little Isuzu troopers do great for this kind of stuff and they go really cheap. For a little more money the Tracker/Sammuri are also nice little off roaders. A lot of folks have gone to these instead of the little ATV's cause they are cheaper and parts are easy to come by.

I would like to have solid axles and no IFS but if the rubber is good I would consider either.
A sammy is what I really want but a v8 wrangler would be sweet!

Trust me, you will NOT find any "old military" Jeeps for $1500. If I were you, I'd keep my eye out for a Sammy.

Sammi's and Trackers go a little higher then that also, that's why I recommneded the Trooper also. They go around that price and are some tuff little monsters off road. I've had Trackers and Troopers and used both for off road and farm work and they both do great. The bad part to the tracker/Sammi though is the stock transfer case. There is shear pin in there tht has a habit or breaking at the worst times. It's a cheap and easy fix to replace it and with aftermarket parts you can get rid of it completely, just something to be aware of. The troopers will pull all day long. I used to load 1500 round bales of hay on a skid and tie it off to the back of the trooper and pull it out through the muddy pastures all the time, worked great.

I didnt say military.

it was very common for people to swap v8s in and a few years in the 70s and 80s some of the wranglers had them.

what size tires did you run?

I looked at a stock 87 sammy today. it was in ok shape. but has very high miles needed some clutch work and exhaust.

how much did they want for it bill? those things aren't getting any cheaper around me. might want to snap it up if it's under a grand.
