There's all sorts of stuff out there! Injectors, chips, air intakes. I don't think your going to see much of, or any gain out of any of the aftermarket intakes out there. VW has there fuel/air dialed in!

I would check all the breather hoses, intake and egr valve. With that kinda mileage I'm sure there pretty well carbon caked. A couple of other things. Find someone with a scan tool or VAGCOM to check the MAF sensor readings. They have a tendency to fail. Also check the wastegate actuator on the turbo. They sit on the bottom side of the turbo and they have a tendency to get dirt/grime build up from the road and causes them to stick. If it's clean try and manufacture a shield to go around it to keep it clean and functioning.

Just check'n/cleaning some of these things, you may find some lost power! Hope this helps!

AFE makes a great intake - oh and they work very well by the way. On the 99 you won't find the enviro stuff unless it was bought in or sold to CA. back then.

MAF's are easy to clean and can be replaced just as easily. The cost varies dramatically though so be careful.

Otherwise, run some treatment through the fuel and see what that does for you. The injectors and turbos make great upgrades on these cars but be careful about running hot and or building too much boost as the block will go tits up.

The van Aaken SmartBox™ is a performance enhancing control unit for electronically regulated diesel engines. The van Aaken SmartBox™ intercepts the signals that go between the ECU and the engine, altering the values as they are transmitted. It is these alterations which give the significant increases in performance that the van Aaken SmartBox™ provides. The apparatus can be easily installed in the 1.9 or 2.0L electronically regulated turbo diesel vehicle. The installation can be performed by anyone and only takes a few minutes. The van Aaken SmartBox™ can also be removed if the vehicle needs to be returned to standard at any time.
