Here It Is New Commuter...

I'll be taking delivery of it next Saturday. It's a 1978 V-dub diesel Wabbit. It's AWESOME condition! Best one I've ever seen! It has 87k original miles, no dents, no rust (couple of fall out spot that will clean up), all new hoses, filters, even has the original AM radio in it! The little guy belong to an old man the passed away, then was given to a gal who drove it a few times, then it was given to the current guy I bought it from. I only paid $500.00 bucks for it. It was running before the battery went dead. Battery appears to be new. This Wabbit appears to have been garaged all of its life. The original glowplug sticker from VW is still intact on the windshield.

Watcha all think?

Looks like a great daily driver, you should see around 50-55 MPG out of that thing on the highway and 40-45 around town.

bow2no1 10-27-2007 04:30 PM

good find! put a little turbo on it to juice her up a bit

DangerousDuramax 10-27-2007 04:31 PM

BOMB IT!!! DO IT, DO IT NOW!!!

Buckshotmckee 10-27-2007 04:41 PM

I think we may have an old turbo laying around the shop from a 1.8 gasser. That would be awesome if I could install some how. The first BOMB will be to lose the muffler.

redneckbuckeye 10-27-2007 05:21 PM

I love it, and maybe a stack through the hood

That's actually to help keep the battery cool, plus, it's good for an extra 25hp! The tire on the back is actually a chute for the drags! :choochoo:

Benjamin 10-28-2007 12:11 AM

don't expect to go over 60-65mph without doing some work on the pump.... a friend of mine had one back in highschool...... it got like 60mpg on the highway..... but it would only go 70 max, downhill, with a tail wind, drafting....... he never ever did a valve adjustment on it and it died a horrable death.....

Diesel Dawgs Performance 10-28-2007 12:15 AM

Take a video of it when you get it straight piped and post it on here....

i think it's like a 10-12' section. you can make a whole exhaust system for that ring.

2500HeavyDuty 10-28-2007 10:09 PM

definitely needs a hood stack, and maybe some marker lamps on top lol

He definetly had something wrong with it! I had an 1980 and it would easily get up and go 80-85. Top advertised speed on these things were 87mph.

Nice find... Enjoy it.:U:

Buckshotmckee 11-03-2007 04:55 PM

Well I got it home this morning. Tried to start her, jut cranked. I cracked the injector lines, bled them and she fired right up, WOOHOO!

I got a problem with it though. After I got it running I noticed a fuel leak. It looks like its coming from the back of the injection pump. Has anybody ever had one of these apart? It's a Bosch VE pump. It looks like it has been leaking for a while cause I noticed some red rtv around the bottom of the pump.

Another thing I found on this little guy is, were the spare is suppose to go (in the trunk) the previous owner added what looks to be a transfer or extra tank, 9.2 gallons according to the sticker. Anybody know anything about these?

I also found an original service invoice from a VW dealer from 1979. :U: It appears the old man that died bought this thing new. So I guess I'm the 4th owner. This thing has changed hands 3 of the 4 times in the past 6 months.

Good find Tye.. Bring it to the next california gtg! :D If I could find one of those in that kinda shape, Id buy it in a heart beat and get rid of my little toyota.

Looks good, should be a nice little commuting rig. Certainly save some cash for the bombing fund!

As for the leak, take a good look at it. Is the housing craked or one of the injector lines. Also, there may be a weep hole in the bottom, indicating the pump is shot.:argh:

Even so, smokin deal, I would have picked it up too!

Carbon Footprint 11-20-2007 08:15 PM

The rear tank isn't plumbed for SVO is it?

please don't bomb it. It's probably the last of it's kind.

dieseljunkie 11-29-2007 01:42 PM

rollin coal in a VW.. now that is awesome!

wrglrroper 11-29-2007 07:12 PM

One good thing is new injection pumps are only a couple hundred dollars. I think injectors are like 25 to 30 a piece.
I have a 82 rabbit truck diesel. "Love it long time"
