wanting to hook for first time ever.....LOTS of questions
 

ok so, in a couple weeks we have a truck pull here and id really really like to try pulling my truck once, BUT i do NOT want to break it at the same time. heres my list of parts. Its a 2001 H.O. motor with NV5600 6 spd trans

First of all, trans is new since Feb, only has about 2000-2500 miles on it.

Anyway, heres parts list of aftermarket/upgraded parts (most dont effect engine but i added anyway)


Full pillar gauges
Edge Drag Comp box
South Bend Dual Disc 3600 clutch (street version)
Fass fuel system
5" Exhaust
amsoil air filter
35" nitto mud grapplers (brand new - 1500 miles on em)
extended control arms

some other stuff that doesnt really apply but thats the basics



Anyway, main 3 items that people really care about in this situation is amount of added power, transmission and clutch.

obviously the added power part isnt huge, 120-140 over stock. trans is brand new, has updated shafts synchros and bearings in it. Clutch was ut in with trans, street version SBDD 3600. And lastly is the tires. obviously their VERY aggressive and brand new as of about may 1st. Ive been TOLD to take those off and go back to my 1/32nd to about 4/32 (range between all 4 tires) tread depth Cooper STTs as so i dont get too much traction and break something.

IM also wondering how to go about launching with my set up, as well as which 4wd range and transmision gear to use. i know i need some ground speed but i also know i cant slip the clutch too much to get out of the hole.

so if anyone can help me put this puzzle together before next weekend, and tell me if i should go ahead and try hooking or just wait it out until im better prepared (mod/power wise) thatd be great. the main thing im concerned about and do NOT want to do is grenade my brand new clutch/trans or break something else major, be it an axle or motor.

If your don't want to break anything then I would not hook to a sled.

i don't know how cummins are with manual trans. but its all personal preference really a lot of guys will sit there and spool their turbo to max and just go balls to the walls but you have more of a chance of breaking stuff or having your motor run away on you. some guys will ease into it and give it hell when they get a pretty good pace going. but you don't really have to go back to your old tires if you feel it start bouncing like its digging in to much just ease off the throttle a little bit. i pulled my 7.3psd stock before in 2nd gear didn't do too bad. but your most likely gonna want to have it locked in 4 high your tires are going to spin faster then what your actually going to move so you if you have it in 4 low you could nuke your transfer.

I would go 4 low and in 3rd gear build ur boost up to 10 psi and let out of the clutch slowly. If u go 4 high u wont get to far

if your not wanting t break, the tires with less tread would deff be better. and will keep ur wheel speed up.

if u pull with a nv5600 the gear i suggest is 4th lo. from different trucks ive been around, a nv5600 3rd is to lo, and 5th is to high. 4th is bout right.

my only concern is your clutch. yes its a dual disk, but its a street dual. it will hold the power and handle pulling fine. but all the strret dual disks ive been around has hard plastic spacers on the floater plate, and after u sled pull with it, it will mess those up and cause the clutch to be a lot louder

if all those plastic pieces do is make the chatter louder......dont really care, its too quiet now the way it is.

ya those were designed to tack the chatter out of it most people hate bout dual disks

ok so....those plastic tabs then do NOT effect anything at all except noise? right?

if you melt them out tho it gets louder then even the first dual disks
