Thinking about pulling this year some

Hey guys, im thinkin about doin a lil truck pullin this year just to see how i like it. I will only pull in maybe a max of 6-8 events, and not sure if all are or are not SFI approved events.

Anyway, im TOTALLY new to this, and know NOTHING about how to set the truck up for it. So what im looking for from you guys, is to tell me what i need to do to get a legal and safe pulling truck. Heres rules from one event last year i will be attending this year. If possible i might try and find the rules of another few local pulls and see what i can muster up.

DIESEL TRUCK RULES

1. Entry fee is $25. NO REFUNDS!
2. Class will be limited to 15 entries. Pre-registration recommended!
3. Pull position will be determined by order entry when received.
4. Diesel trucks will run in their own weight class.
5. Weight class will be 8000 lbs.
6. Max hitch height will be 26".
7. Hitch point must be beyond frame rails - No pulling type hitches allowed.
8. Front weights will be allowed, but not to extend more than 60" from centerline of front axle.
9. Max tire size of 35". Must be DOT approved.
10. All trucks must be licensed and insured and have proof of it.
11. All trucks must be in line when called or may not be allowed to pull with no refund, and driver must be in truck at al times if it's running.
12. Any vehicle outside of boundaries, or has any breakage will get distance at that point.
13. All pulling is at the pullers own risk and they are responsible for their actions, and any driver believed to be intoxicated may be disqualified.
14. Blankets or scatter shields are not required around bell housing area, but are strongly recommended.
15. Drivetrains must be 1 ton or less.
16. Must have stock appearing front bumper or no bumper.
17. No exhaust out of hood or fenderwall.
18. No arguing with officials whose decisions are final!

*Remember, this is only a truck pull, so have fun!!! Pulling is a privilege, not a right.

Man that sounds like a free for all my kinda pull!

might want a set of injectors, turbo and a clutch ....

R&RDiesel 01-16-2010 08:47 AM

Deffinetly get a clutch, build or buy a good adjustable pulling hitch, suspension stops, and a weight bracket. After you do those things and the clutch if budget allows, do a little to the motor, injectors, turbo....

CumminsCrazed 01-16-2010 11:09 AM

yeah i know all that, im basically looking more for, what i need to do to the truck, as far as pulling hitch etc etc, what do i need for one, how do i make one, how do i set it up, how to do susp. stops, weight bracket etc. Thats stuff i know nothing about. Also maybe explain somewhat how to go about pulling with the truck, gear to use, how much to slip clutch, 4L or 4H and which gear to combine it with, that kinda stuff.

i already know what the motor needs done and theres a SBC DD going in this spring.

low-range 3rd gear is what I pulled in, and that was just right, started to bog down a little at the end then spun out. You want to slip the clutch as little as possible, I wound the engine to about 2k rpms and felt the chain tighten and just dumped the clutch, didn't work so good, killed it. So I wound a little higher and rode the clutch just a bit watched the tach as I was letting out trying not to let the rpm's drop much, probably only slipped it for about 5-10ft. As for a hitch I just put a clevis in the reese, and that worked fine for me. Remember chances of you winning are probably close to none, so there is no reason to spend a bunch of money on fancy stuff you don't need, but a set of traction bars would be nice. Good luck

CumminsCrazed 01-16-2010 01:06 PM

yeah, i got a local friend who has pulled in the past, and he makes his own traction bars, he said hed help me make a set for my truck as well as help with anything else, hes been out of the sport a couple years now and would like to get back into it, even if it means just helpin me

J-Pipes 01-16-2010 06:56 PM

I will warn you on this though, it is very addicting! and has the potential to become very expensive if you want to win. Thats why I am getting into antique tractor pulling, I am going to be pulling the pure farm class, so I don't have to do any mods to the tractor, and I am just doing it because it is fun, I don't expect to win or even place, but that would always be a plus. But I would like to pull my truck once a year or so just to see how it is progressing. Good luck it is a blast!

i dont quite understand one of the rules u posted. why would u have to remove an aftermarket bumper? but allow weight to be hung?

CumminsCrazed 01-18-2010 12:49 AM

no clue, how should i go about making some "bump stops" so the sled doesnt stop half way into my bed?

biged681985 01-18-2010 11:57 AM

ur numper works as a bump stop, but i doubt u get it moving fast enough to get it to hit ya unless the weight dont move like its supposed to :argh: only seen it do that twice one the same truck, same night, and no one else had a problem with it doing that.

Dodgehunter84 01-18-2010 08:37 PM

for suspension stops i removed the factory rubber ones and used them for a pattern to make mine. I took a 1/4 inch plate of steel and marked the holes using the factory rubber stops as a template and then welded a piece of 1/4 inch c-channel to the plate. I'm making new ones out of 3"x1" box tubing with 1/4" walls.

I ran 4lo 3rd gear the first couple of times but, I ran out of rpms quickly. I was running a 62mm turbo too. After that I ran 4lo 4th. The biggest thing is just to have fun!

CumminsCrazed 01-21-2010 11:10 PM

haha thanks whit and everyone else!!

kjpcummins 01-22-2010 05:45 PM

What gearing does your truck have.

CumminsCrazed 02-24-2010 11:08 PM

3.55 kyle.

kjpcummins 02-25-2010 07:24 PM

I would run 4L 4th with 3.55s and 285s. Get some 125hp injectors and a clutch and you will have alot of fun.

kent7189 02-25-2010 09:37 PM

I would stronly recomend putting some sort of driveshaft loop & u-joint shield. If you have ever seen one come apart you can apprecitate the concern for the saftey of the spectators. If you are planning on doing a couple of events anyway it is well worth the piece of mind.
