How do I get started
 

Last year at the last event of the year I thought I would try to pull the sled with my truck. It was the first time I ever tried it or even thought of it. I have a 98 3/4 ton 24 valve 4x4 with a 5 speed with you 3 basic mods for now but lookin to do a few more. I hook up to the sled had it in 4-low and took off in 4th gear, I only got 70 foot and smoked the heck out of my clutch. :argh: But I am hooked :rocking: and lookin forward to doing it again. What is the best way to take off from the start, do I need to build alittle boost before I take off, what gear do I need to be in, do I shift, I have seen videos of guys and it looks and sounds like they are shifting while pulling. Like I said I am hooked on pulling now and lookin forward to doing it again

4 low 3rd is a safe bet to pull in. Ride the clutch as little as you can coming outa the hole, fully engaged as soon as possible. Never shift, never! :ouch: Get a new clutch, a dual disk from southbend is your best bet. What size tires are you running and what gear in the front and rear diffs?

well first off your going to need a Dual disk clutch (valair makes killer clutches)

i would at least go with the 3600 lever style
if your truck a 3 speed pull 3rd low or 2nd high if its a 6th speed 4th low or i think it 2nd high or 3rd.

your going to need to get a redline box for rpm

and i would get and upgrade fuel system unless your running and SO pump they are great for 5000 rpm make sure you have enough fuel to you vp walbro or airdog,fass

drive shaft loops if need for your class and i would get traction bars and bump stops on the back so the sled dont hit and 1 more thing get block in so you can adjust how far your truck goes down

dd clutch is a must and tracton bars

any thing else just ask last year i started hooking to the sleed a decent amount i may not be the best but its all for fun
it takes time to keep up with the big dogs

Thanks for the help. My tires are 285/75/16s, I am not sure what gears I have in the axles. I do have a fass 150/90 fuel pump on it along with air intake 5" exhuast and the edge juice with additude programmer on it. The truck is my D.D. so I not going to go to extreme with just lookin to have a little weekend fun with it. I am going to get in into the 550 to 600 rwhp range and have fun with it.

your going to need a charger then i would look in to a 64/71/13ss or call Engineered diesel they can get you a sweet charger.

if you running stock injector that will need upgrades as a long with valve springs
look in side i have link for great valve springs

your going to want to run at least 4000 rpm and drop down to around 3500 going down the track

dont for get your dd clutch and bigger input shaft if you dont have a six speed that is must

get a valair clutch i have personaly watched these clutches take a beating and they hold up extremely well

local track rules say 3.2 atmosphere twins or unlimited single looking for input on wich way to go

wow you gonna jump right in there with teh big boys huh! They dont have a street class?

look at the track rules because they normaly say no shifting a manual trans. but a auto can. i like 4 low in mine have had real good luck in it.

how do you run a sled pull if you have an automatic??
