Need a GOOD brake controller

The stock brake controller in my truck (see sig) sucks at best. What plug and play brake controllers are out there for our 2011+ Dodges. Trailer in sig has electric drum brakes.

For a top-of-the-line unit, the Tekonsha Prodigy. I think the latest upgrade is called the P3?

Actually, the BEST trailer brake controller on the market right now is the Max Brake.
Like the Smart Brake which came before it, the Max Brake utilizes a small pressure transducer that T's into one of the brake lines coming off of the brake master cylinder. The controller, which remains mounted in the cab (in ANY position, since it is not inertia controlled) uses pressure readings from the brake lines to control voltage to the trailer brakes. It uses no acclerometer or inertia device to control the brakes. You press the trucks brake pedal as hard as you want to control braking and it immediately sends the correct voltage to the brakes.

Non of the above is to say that the Prodigy line of brake controllers are nothing less then good, but Max Brake is the controller that gives a driver ultimate, accurate and immediate control of the trailer brakes by the way it is designed. Those drivers who have "made the switch" from ANY other type of controller, know and appreciate the difference.

Personally, I run the Brake Smart and if it ever goes belly-up (knock wood), I will run the Max Brake, since the BRake Smart is no longer available.
FYI- I have absolutelt no affilliation or interest in either company, but simply want the best controller on the market since so much is riding on it.

The ONLY difference in installation from other brake controllers, is the need to T the transducer into one of the brake lines on the master cylinder. They come with simple, easy to read instructions, and do not require bleeding of the brake system, unless for some reason you press the brake pedal before you tighten up the T or transducer.

Here is post with pics on my install--

Here is a thread on it--

And another--

Prodigy or Brakesmart better with exhaust brake?? - TDR Roundtable

PLEASE NOTE--the above threads are about the Brake Smart, the original model of this type of comtroller. The Max Brake, made by a diffrenet company, operates according to the same principals and is for all practical (though not necesarily aesthetic) purposes, the same thing.

Hope this helps.

I had a Reese towpower and prodigy. I liked both of them, but the Prodigy was better. I hear ya on those stock ones sucking. The 2010 my dad had was terrible. Worst part about that truck was the dealership. Guy came in and asked the service manager if he could install a stock brake controller in a truck that didn't come with one. The service manager looked him right in the eye and asked dead serious "What is a brake controller?" My jaw just dropped and my eyes got wide a saucers.

prodigy i run, the newest one. i've had to return different ones about 3 or 4 times in the 2 trucks i run in the last year. they work great, but everynow and the then, they will act like the brake is sticking and the voltage won't go back to 0. othert than that, they been working very good.
