traction bar questions

ok i been looking at traction bars alot lately and have questions about them. first my question is why does everyone seem to have long ones i know they look better but what purpose do they serve? how much would they help on ice i live in fairbanks alaska and the roads are solid ice so would they help me trying to get to where i dont have to drive in 4x4 all the time in the winter?? ok when mounting i noticed some are using fixed joints on one side and hinge joints on the other when some are running hinge joints on both end whats better and why?? just looking to get all the info i can and make my daily driver not cost me an arm and a leg in the winter to drive thanks guys looking forward to your replys

long ones have better geometry for your suspension. will not help at all on ice. just on hard launches so your axle doesnt wrap. joints are more of a preference as long as they are strong enough and allow for suspension travel.
