Snow/Mud Tires

i amlooking for a set of tires for the snow an mud season. I m looking at cooper st? how bout you guys what do you like? I do tow a lot

Diesel Dawgs Performance 01-01-2008 08:21 PM

I haven't ever owned any Coopers Tires but I have heard they don't have a very good tread life

Uncle Bubba 01-01-2008 08:32 PM

Be sure to look through this tire area here, there is some previous threads with a lot of good info in them.

2500HeavyDuty 01-01-2008 08:36 PM

Ive heard the bfg a/t work good in the snow. but me personally never driven in snow with them

LOGANSTANFORTH 01-01-2008 09:50 PM

you dont want BFG's on snow and ice, unless you like sliding around uncontrollably and almost killing yourself.......

Longhorn 01-01-2008 10:15 PM

I have run most tires on the market in the past 10 years, and a snow/mud tire has never been a good option as they always seem to excel in one area but fail in the other. My last set were Hankook M/T's and they were awesome in mud, gravel, dirt of any kind and I got great mileage out of them but they were trecherous on ice and snow....

I have now just tried a set of Toyo open country M/T's (since I used to run the A/T) and I am THRILLED with this tire. My daily routine will see me in everything from hard pack ice, deep snow to mud with tons of trail and gravel roads thrown in and these seem to handle all of it well. They are not cheap but worth every penny in my opinion. They are a tad louder on the hiway than I would like, but a small price to pay....

If you tow a lot I dont think you will love a cooper. The ones I had had some sidewall flex when pulling.

spoolinaround 01-02-2008 05:04 PM

I'll stand by my Hi-Tec Retreads, run them on the durango, the 98 and on the old s-10 beater

dozerboy 01-05-2008 10:00 PM

Toyo m55 are suppose to be a great tire not sure how well they do in the mud and they're big $$$.

TEXASPOWER 01-05-2008 10:14 PM

i bought the cooper stt's for my NBS chevy dually (my welding rig)wich are a little bit more extreme tread than the st but i love them and bout to put 6 285 70 17son the ford dually they do awsome in the mud and clean real good up here in wyo right now they havent seen to much ice and snow but the seem to do good on the right of way with snow mud mix were every one else is slidin around with there at's im un stopable

LOGANSTANFORTH 01-06-2008 11:14 AM

helps to weigh 8K+ too in the snow...

spoolinaround 01-06-2008 12:22 PM

that it does, ready to plow I weigh 16300 with me, a helper, 2 blowers, a mafia block, skid of salt and a full tank of gas, oh and cant forget the 10' road blade too. it is the nly time that truck rides like a caddilac

Um.........well I don't know how much snow and ice is where you are but in the Rockies where I live we see our share and I have zero complaints on my BFG AT's on ice and mild snow.

atrd86 12-07-2009 09:07 AM

I've heard the Coopers wear very quickly too. Also heard that about the Toyo M/T's from my buddy that had them and that they were a bit louder but he's kinda stupid so I dont know how much weight his comments hold.

I've had BFG A/T's and completely hated them. They sucked in rain, mud, sand, gravel, snow, and ice. I slid through so many stop signs it was unreal.... and I was trying to be overly cautious in most cases!

Right now I have ProComp Xtreme A/T's and they are the best tires I've ever had. I cant hear em when I'm cruising down the highway, they've gotten me out of some pretty sticky situations in deep mud and snow. They also have a 40 000 mile tread wear warranty on em. I've easily put over 40 000 miles on em and have tons of tread left. I wont ever buy another tire.

Nope - Ive had the Cooper ST's on for a couple of years now and they are wearing really good.

BUT, they SUCK on ice.

K50 12-07-2009 12:06 PM

So BFG A/T KO's, I thought they were good in snow and ice?? What size are you guys running that have huge complaints??

For snow and ice you should be running as narrow as possible...so a 245 or 265 max. If you're running 285-305+ Yeah you'll slide a lot more...

Deezel Stink3r 12-07-2009 12:13 PM

my friends always complain about the BFG A/T during rain and ice. Don't know about snow.
What about real winter tires? It's a huge different- I would never again go without.

Bad side is: It is the third set of tires now- I'm running out of space.
But they changed the law over here: You have to have appropriate winter tires now.:td:

atrd86 12-07-2009 12:39 PM

My BFG's were pretty much whatever the stock size tire that came on the truck was. That was before I bombed 'er all out.

smoken 12-11-2009 10:52 AM

tire

:humm:I am currently running Mastercraft courer C/T which is just a knock off from Cooper and I am not impressed at all with the tread life, traction...

A good snow tire ≠ a good mud tire. They are basically mutually exclusive. You're best bet is an e-load range A/T tire for all-around performance if you tow and see snow. Mud tires or so-called M/T-type tires are horrible in snow.

dieseljunkie 12-13-2009 07:25 PM

Interesting. I bought a set of these based on their 40k mile warranty. I have about 30k on these, and I doubt I'll get to 40k. I've already talked to them about the "warranty", seeing as how I won't get 40k out of them. As soon as they found out that drive up and down winding mountain roads, they told me that they wouldn't warranty the tire. That being said, I won't buy procomps again. Trying to decide on my next tire now, as I will need to replace them after this winter.

Ya weird.... I used mine in the Rockies for probably a good 10k miles too and they held up awesome.

NCFPD 12-14-2009 06:14 PM

I am on my second set of pep boy tires there mts are awsome and my first set last pretty close to 40,000 and still had some tread left very little but had some and they priced awsome. My dad got 45.ooo outta dunlop mud rovers i ust to run them on my jeeps but dad had them on his ram so i would say one of them twe and they both do well in the snow

bigtim44 12-16-2009 08:30 AM

I've been running the Treadwright recaps on my 98 dodge ram 2500 for 2 years now, they are a 245/75/16, 10 ply load range E,they are made from new michelin casings, and are studdable, got studs in mine.
I plow with the truck and drive up into the boonies to go snowmobiling, great traction on hard pack snow and ice aswell as the deep snow.
At $292 for a set of four with a warranty I'm sold on them:tu:

c-power ram 12-16-2009 08:59 AM

I have a set of the st 285 75 16 and love them in mud and snow:tu:

nate379 12-16-2009 09:32 AM

The BFG A/Ts are bad in ice and snow, almost as bad as the M/Ts.

I am running Goodyear Duratracs in a 315/75/16 and I am VERY happy with them. We have been getting lots of snow and they are awesome.

Not sure on the tread life as I put them on in October and have only put maybe 4000 miles on them so far.

http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires....ngler+DuraTrac

They were reasonable in price as well. I paid around $200 a tire.

atrd86 12-19-2009 06:10 AM

Back to the pro comps I just split a sidewall today for no apparent reason. Havent even wheeled the thing this year besides a little big of rough trail during whitetail season. Now I gotta get a full set. $1500 I didnt wana spend this week.:s:

07redsled 12-19-2009 04:32 PM

DONT BUY MT ATZ'S THEY SUCK they dont self clean they dont dig the dont wear the only thing they do ok is drive on dry pavement, worst tire i ever installed :dang:

rjjp 12-27-2009 04:20 AM

I've got 265/75R16 cooper discover atr on my 2wd F250 and no problems so far just a little sliding when I want to turn sharp in the snow, wear isn't too bad on them unless your lovin the posi (I had fun when I was 16 with this truck). I don't care for the 31 10.5 R15 BFG AT KO on my 90 F150, they're great on the freeway but suck if there's gravel on the pavement or it's wet or your on snow(packed is fine, powder, they suck, dry pavement great, dirt great but nothing else (guess who had hell gitting out of the snow with his half ton today). O yea I almost forgot the 315/75R16 Wild County Radial MTR on my 97 F150, they sucked. Even dry pavement I was sliding, but damn was it fun (I love to scare the hell out of the rice in detroit). Ok, I'll get off my soap box now

atrd86 12-30-2009 10:36 AM

Well they were all out of my Procomp Xtreme A/T's, so I got em to throw on Cooper Discoverer STT's. Turns out a couple of my buddies have been running them and absolutely love them and say they wear well, but horrible on ice...... which is pretty much a given hahaha.

So we'll see how these work, pick the rig up today after work.

DanLowe 02-03-2010 09:20 PM

I have BF Goodrich Commercial Traction T/A's all around on my Dually...use the 4x4 sparingly, by far, the BEST tire I've owned. The Commercial Tractions have limited sizes available, probably due to being load range E. Hope this helps!

Hate to say it but I told ya so. :moon: Anyway, Cooper STT's :tu: Got 30000 out of a set of 285 8 plys on my dodge and they were 1/4 tread when I took them off. That included alot of smokey burnouts and boosted launches. Currently running 315 ATR's and they suck. To wide for snow, not aggressive enough for mud and not heavy enough to tow (only 8 ply) :argh: :td: Had BFG AT's on my chevy 1500 worked great in mud, snow, sucked in rain or ice, once they got to 3/4 -1/2 tread they just plain sucked. And stay away from the goodyear MTR's. They suck. No traction on wet roads and they dont self clean in mud like the STT's do.

DIRTYMAX2004 02-04-2010 10:01 AM

i have 35" ProComp AT's i got 60,000 miles out of them but they sucked on anything but pavement. they took forever to clean out and never gripped in snow or mud. I just ordered 35" Toyo Open Country MT's today. they are suppose to be one hell of a tire from everyone i talked too. they weren't cheap :argh::ouch:

BK1977 02-04-2010 11:10 AM

I have goodyear mt/r's 305/70/17's and I am really impressed. we got a pretty good snow storm for TN standards 5" plus snow and sleet. I had no problem in fact I pulled 4 people out of ditches and driveways. Just a testiment the last guy I pulled out as I went to get out of my truck i slipped and fell on my arse and thought I might have some trouble but the truck didnt even slip at all pulling his full size toyota suv out.
