tire question for guys that do alot of towing..
I'm at the point that I"m starting to look for replacment tires...
I know the factory tires are E rated, and I haven't found a ton of tires in the E range that are in the size I want to put on the truck (285/70/17, up from the 265/70/17 that came on the truck) I've seem some other rating #'s, other then the D and E rating that are the standard, anyone have any idea what they mean? I was going to just go with the BFG radial t/a that have been around forever, they are available in the E rating in the size I want, but before I buy anything I'd like to hear what guys are running and having good luck wise, how long they're lasting, etc. I have a 24 foot enclosed trailer that is probably around the 8000 lb mark with the car, golf cart and all the other crap in it. |
I run those BFG's and get between 40k-50k out of them. Some don't have that kind of luck with them though. I regularly tow and my truck alone is 9200lbs.

i am running bfgoodrich stock size and i tow the pulling truck on a dual tandem goose. weight is just under 15 k

Check this as well for the load index Load Index Chart - Discount Tire. I've asked this question and seem lots of people like the Toyo Open Country AT. They come in the size your looking in an E rated tire that's supposed to have a 3750 lb capability. Its likely the tire I'm gonna go with in about 5000miles. FYI, Toyo also has a 285/75-17 that's an inch taller than the 70 (34 rather than 33)

dont go with any size that has a P in front of it.(EX.P265/75/17) The P means 4 ply. As far as load range E and D, E is a 10 ply and D is an 8 ply. You go by what number it is in the alphabet doubled.

So as long as it's an E rated tire there should be no problems...
I looked up that 285/75 toyo, christ the cheapest price I could fine was over 300 a tire, that's way more then I'm looking to spend that's for sure, and I have doubts about that clearing, that's alot taller then stock, with the wheel cut all the way I can see that rubbing all over the inner fender. 285/70 BFG is probably gonna get the nod at this point. |
right...there shouldnt be any problems with the 10 ply, and I would get the smaller size to be forsure that they arent gonna rub:tu:

The P actually stands for passenger vs LT or light truck
