Whats a good mud tire?
 

I was just wondering what a good set of tires would be for my truck since I'm going to have to replace mine sometime this summer. I got some free used ones from a friends and put those on since they all matched and were way better then what came on the truck when I bought it but they aren't in real great shape either. In the summer I usually take the dirtiest route to wherever it is I'm going (so I can have some fun before work or whatever) but being in a rural area, I still do quite a bit of highway driving too. I have factory steel wheels so I can't run anything huge. I have 235/85/16s now but I think I might be able to run 285/75/16s ok, but maybe something in between just to be safe. So what have you guys run that you liked that was decently priced and if you ordered online where from? I'd like to go with a mud tire but all terrains would work too. Thanks

Toyo Mt's are my first choice, good mileage, low noise and nice aggression.
Pro Comp AT for the Jeep have never been stuck, only 5k miles so far, no noise, and nice aggression.

I want to try the Nitto Trail grappler next on my truck or the Jeep. They look like a decent tire with semi aggressive tread.

I would stay away from the Nitto MT's they are ugly tires, loud tires and wear like crap so I have heard.

I've read one of the off roading magazine's reviews on the Toyo MT and they said that it wasn't that great in the mud, that it didn't self clean very well. I suppose they're worth a shot. I can probably get them pretty cheap here, they are pretty popular. And for the Nitto Trail Grapplers, if only I could afford them. When they came out and I read the review for them, I was just about drooling. Maybe someday. :humm:

I would say they are pretty good in the mud, I have never had a problem with them and I have put over 150k miles on my trucks with them.

Like I said, I have also been very impressed with the Pro Comp tires. We have taken the Jeep in some pretty nasty places that I figured for sure we were going to get stuck but they just cut right threw it. It is not heavy as a diesel for sure but it has not guts either if you have to push your way threw something.

buck shot bias ply was the best mud tire i ever saw. but they got no milage. well tenders run those here in wv. as long as somebody else is paying the bill. they are like putting chains on. the radial buck shots are not as good.

I like my Cooper ST's on my farm truck, I've also had good luck with BFG AT's. My Dodge is 9200lbs and I get 40k-50k out of my BFG's. I'm looking at getting the Goodyear Duratracs to see what they'll do. Good luck finding tires, there's tons of choices out there for sure.

ive got 8k on my 285/75/16 Cooper discoverer st. And they still look brand new and low noise and lil rubbin.

Lookin for a mud tire that wears well on the highway is a contradiction of terms unfortunately. The more aggressive the tread the shorter the life span and the worse they handle on wet pavement. Life's a compromise. The Truxxus radial were the best tire I ever owned for mud. It took me places in 2wd that most other tires wouldn't in when I was in 4wd but 15000 miles and they were bald.

Before I went to the 19.5 wheels I had a set of Toyo commercial rated tires that did great in snow and mud and being commercial rated meant they would have gone the extra miles if I hadn't changed em out so soon.

The best mud tire -- period -- is the Interco Bogger. Next in line is their Swamper. BUT -- neither tire is worth a crap on the highway. As was noted above, you either get a great mud tire or you get to make compromises.

I'd check out the Cooper STX, the Pro Comp MT Xtreme (I'm not a fan of their Xterrains -- side slip way too much -- you end up at the bottom of a valley every time you have to cross a side hill), Pro Comp MT, and Truxus are all about even and next in line for a dual purpose tire. I'm also liking the new Dunlop MT MAXX Traction. I'm running them on the plow rig at work and they do a great job.

There are other tires out there that are acceptable, and depending on which part of the country you live, may be a better choice. For instance the Goodyear MT/R are great tires if you live in places where sharp rock is predominant, but they suck in clay type muds (turn into gum-balls and never clean out). I do not recommend any AT type tread for actual mud use. And, I also note that everyone's idea of mud is different. As one who off-roads all over the nation, I've seen a ton of tires in action and I know that certain tires perform better in some conditions than others. The tires I've recommended above are good all around choices.
