How to calculate travel?
I am looking at Fox Racing Shox and since they are sold by amount of travel I was wondering how you calculate how much wheel travel a vehicle has.

I believe it would be the distance frm when the wheel has no weight on it at all to fully compressed

1. support you rig by the frame
2. remove shocks, may need to remove a tire from side you are going to measure on 3. put a jack under the OPPOSITE tire and crank it up until it is about to lift truck off of jack stand 4. with opposite side drooped, measure from say the top of a trailing arm close to the axle to a spot on the frame, this will be your extended length. Best to add an inch don't want to hyper-extend your shock. If you measured 12 inches, go for 13. 5. remove jack and put under side you just measured and jack up, measure to same spot, this will be your compressed length. Best to SUBTRACT an inch, don't want to smash your shock. If you measured 6 inches, go with 5. 6. subtract the second number from the first and this will be your travel, although it's been my experience that compressed and extended are what you are after. |
