Siping tire tread for traction and longevety???
 

Has anyone here done this siping thing to their tires? I was at a buddie's body shop in Salt Lake and saw a Tundra with some Toyo MT's. I checked it out and saw the tires had slits in each tread knob. It seems that they do it there commonly to get better traction and it lengthens the tire life. I fould they do it at a place in Fort Collins and was considering it.

I was told that it only works on tires at around half of their tread spent or more. They do it for up to $45 a tire in Salt Lake. Not bad if it'll save mileage as well as give better traction.

Anyone with experience on this????

I have not done it yet but I plan to. Im not sure it would make the tire last any longer, but I can see the improved traction especially on ice, snow, and wet roads. Tire siping is very popular in the Northwest.

Any idea why you cant do it on new tires?


FYI, you can buy a tire siper and do it yourself for about $100...check out ebay.

No clue. I heard that the tires are siped from the factory, the tread compound is too soft, and other reasons. I'm in the timeframe that's perfect so I'll see about getting them done and try it out next winter.

some guys do it up here, but i don't. it does improve traction on ice but with the tread squirm it will actually wear your tires faster.

Actually it helps keep the rubber on your tires run cooler and it helps on snow and ice. My family sipes all of our tires

siping is good if your gonna run your tire mostly on the pavement, you start running them off highway and the gravel tears em up real bad!!!! gravel gets in the siped grooves an eats the rubber up

Found a place 40 miles away that does it cheap. I'll have it done before I move in a few months.
