That will be the key right there, with the wrong back spacing any bigger tire can rub.

I get a little rub, full lock with the suspension in motion, but that is only a 17x10 with 33x12.50x17

As stated backspacing makes a BIG difference.
There were 285/75/16's on my truck when I bought it. They would rub...
The 305/70/17's I have on the truck now don't rub.
The difference, the 285's were on 10" Eagle 058's with 4.5" of backspacing.
The 17's are on 9" wide Moto Metal 909's with 4.5" backspace.
That put's a whole one inch to the outside of the truck.
So when you would turn the wheel sharp the outside edge of the tire would hit the back edge of the inner fender.

I have found this link VERY helpful in playing with tire sizes and such.

Custom Wheels

I put up pics with the Eagles with 285/75/16's (Nitto Terra Grapplers), 909's with 305/70/17's (Nitto Terra Grapplers)
and Stock wheels with 285/75/16's (Nitto Dura-Grapplers)
