Toyo or Nitto
Have a 2008 Dodge (see sig) with 3.73 gearing. I have about 30kmiles and will be needing new tires soon. I do most of my driving on the road pulling a 10000lb toy trailer. I'd like to go to a little bigger tire for the looks but stay with the stock rims (17x8 aluminum). I'm considering either the Toyo Open Country AT or Nitto Dura Grappler. The sizes i'm looking at are either 285/70R-17 (1" taller than stock) or 285/75R-17 (2" taller than stock). I'd like to know thoughts on Toyo vs. Nitto and what people think about the size. The truck tows ok with stock tires but I'm a little worried that the larger tire would lower the RPM below 1500 at 60mph. I guess to keep the RPMs up on the road when towing I could lock out 6th gear (6th OD is 0.63, 5th OD is 0.81, 4th is 1.00). Anybody have any thoughts.

Toyo IMO no question.

I've ran both on my Duramax and the Toyo's seem to do better in wet conditions, but they last exactly the same mileage on my trucks, 45K. The Toyo's were quieter than the Nitto's after some mileage was put on them. Another one for Toyo.

They are sister companies so they are probably real similar.
My vote is Toyo though, I've spent a lot of money in the last six years with them and I'm very happy. Not sure that I would change to another tire. |

How are the Trail Grapplers? How do they compare?
|
I would say Nitto we have had a few sets of them on our dodge's and I like them!
|
I can't justify spending more for the same rubber, being as they are basically from the same company it's quite likely they share the same raw materials, including the rubber compounds. The two companies can have more/different tread patterns to appeal to a wider audience. Nitto has some more specialized designs, and I believe that is the whole idea where they (Nitto) came from in the 1st place.
Nitto's for me. Got them on both my trucks - Duras and Terras. Great tires. |
toyo's all the way . i have the M/T and they are quiet for a mud tire for sure:tu:

You are comparing apples and oranges...The Duragrappler is a HTR tire (Highway Terrain Tire), the Open Country A/T is well, an A/T...Two way different tires...Toyo has a HTR tire that is comparable to the Duragrappler, its actually built with the same carcass, just a different tread layed on it...same with the Toyo and Nitto MT's and AT's, the same but different...If yo uare towing all the time, Duragrapplers, if your driving alot, A/T's...

:td:dont go with nitto they suck horrible on wet road and are loud on highway they dont do nearly as well as they look go with toyo also might want to consider mickey thompson or goodyear there also got tires
|
Out of the two, go with Toyo's. I love my ProComp's though. They are aggressive looking but still a streetable tire.

This is Nitto's. So obnoxiously loud!!
OTOH tho, I've heard alot of complaints about Procomps. :w2: |
all have to say is, just get a load range e tire. who ever/whatever tire you get. i have tried load range d and e. and the d range tires alway cone/cup on the edges.
i have tried diffrent pressures in the tires. alignment shocks. i just think its the weight of the truck. goodluck |

FWIW, I ran Toyo M/T's on my Land Cruiser for two years and I will never, ever buy another Toyo again. I hated these tires with a passion! Now, I know that I was using them in a totally different arena but I was less than impressed in every situation.

YouTube - Raj's Dodge on the dyno This is Nitto's. So obnoxiously loud!! ---AutoMerged DoublePost--- toyo a/t are awesome. i love mine. everyone hates on me for my "street" tires and then they ride in my truck and want them. they are quiet but they still have amazing traction in the snow and sand. i havent run the nittos but i heard they dont last as long as the toyos. |
I love my Toyo A/Ts, I ran the Nittos before the Toyos and I got about 17K miles on them. My Toyos are coming up on 24K and they still have alot of tread left on them
|
I would also suggest Toyo. I have heard good and bad things about Nitto. Definitely get a load range E though if you are going to tow. As for the tire size I run 35" and I can keep up 1700 rps in 6th gear unloaded easy and I also have 3.73 gears. I think you will be fine 35" or less. Course maybe I have no place in this thread. I run Cooper tires and love them to death. Mine are snow tires but they are quieter on the road than a friends BFG KO's in my opinion. Expensive as a mother though. :c:

toyo tires are good but my dad just got a full set of nitto terra graplers and he likes them more than the dura grapplers they look nice and ride smooth and have load range e:tu:

One of the guys I know ran a set on his F-350 6.4 and he hated them, bad traction and horrible mileage. He didnt even get a full warm season out of them before he switched back to his stockers for winter. I dont know about the dura grapplers though. for what you are looking for that would probably be your best bet though. I wouldnt do the Trail grapplers they just look cheap to me. You might run a set of dune grapplers just to see how they do. |
Toyo guy
I'm on my second set of Toyo At's. I sold my 285-70-17's to a guy in CT and replaced them with 285-75-17 AT which I purchased for next to nothing. These tires have never had less than 2000# extra weight on them from day one. No flats, vibes nothing. My other friend has a 2007 with a flatbed-mounted Phoenix popup on it. With utility cabinets, auxiliary H2O etc wet it weighs 12,000#. Carli Suspension keeps it happy. This guy's Toyo AT's have survived over 1000 miles of intense Baja Pacific coast roads with nary a cut and zero flats. I'm sold. I just wish Toyo'd release a 285-75-17 M-55. I had those on my '98.5 and they rock.
