Review: Pro Comp X-Terrain
 

Well, had these tires in size 315/75R16D mounted up last Wednesday, and have had a few opportunities to test them out. So far, I love them. First, they balanced very easily, and solved my vibration issue I had with the old, out of round, BFG A/T's. Believe it or not, they are only a tick or two higher on the noise scale than the old BFG's as well, much much much quieter than I expected, even at 75MPH. Took them through a few of the local sand and gravel quarry's, and I think these will do very well in the dunes. Air them down a little bit and don't spin the wheels to hard and you should have no problems. Through some of the larger rock piles, they bite very well, and pulled me over some ledges the old BFG's could never get me over. The sidebiters definitely add to the sidewall strength, nothing cut into the tires at all, and the limestone around here is known to be sharp.

I did hit a few short, shallow mud holes, and being they were so wet, the tires just bit down and grabbed, no problems. Although, some of the trails getting to the holes were moist clay, and unless you keep the wheel speed up, they gum up in a hurry, and its like you're driving on grease. Someone told me to spray them with Pam cooking spray and it'll keep the clay from sticking. I'll have to give that a try.

Haven't had any snow or ice yet, so I'll have to report back on that later.

Pulled 21K lbs of corn (that was the biggest loaded wagon), and the tires didn't seem to mind a bit, pulled just like it would have with the BFG's.

Overall, like I said, I'm impressed. With how aggressive they made the truck look, and how well they've performed, I'm very happy. Have a logging job this weekend, and it looks like its gonna be pretty muddy, maybe this time I won't be getting stuck.

I'm on my second set of Pro Comps. The first set were their M/T's in 33 x 12.50. Got near 40,000 miles out of them, but I was very anal about rotating them... every 3000 miles. They weren't the best in the snow unless it was 6 inches deep or better, but they were relatively quiet for a mudder and a damn sight better in the gooey stuff than the stock BFG's.

I'm now running a set of Pro Comp's Extreme All Terrains (305-65R17) and so far, they have been an excellent tire! All 4 balanced up with less than 1 ounce of lead and 2 required only 1/4 ounce! They do surprisingly well in snow, are 10 ply rated for my hauling and towing days and thus-far, are wearing like iron. They ain't no mudder, but they still do better than a "regular" A/T.

Well that's interesting. Funny thing is, the recall supposedly affects the All Terrain, but that's a worn-out mudder in the pic.:humm:

Well, I had a chance to try them out in some mud. DEEEEEEEP MUD.

Went up to Dunn Tire Offroad Park yesterday morning, decided to enter the mud bog race, well becuase I was running a 35" tire I was put in the "Super Stock" class... Not cool. The "Stock" class trucks got to run in a shallow pit, which was easy enough for 2wd trucks (with good tires) to make it through. Not so much in the deep pit all the other classes had to run through.

I got stuck up against guys with huge lifts, running alcy motors, full spools, and 38.5" tires. I made it about 30ft into the pit, maybe 2 trucks lengths, then sunk straight to the bottom. This is the nastiest mud hole I've ever seen. The kind of mud thats soupy enough to give you NO traction, thick enough to stop all forward momentum, deep enough to lever let you touch bottom, and sticky enough to take you a week of pressure washing to get it all out.

At one point in the hole its 5ft deep...

3 guys made it through in the "Outlaw" class, where there are NO LIMITS. 1 was running big 55" Ag tires, another was running 52" cut Boggers, and the other was a Cutlass body on a K20 frame running 49" IROK's.

Anyway, the X-Terrains pulled good in the thicker mud that wasn't so deep, and they do great on logging roads, but on a heavy truck in DEEEEEP mud, better get a set of Swampers.

Been thinking of getting a set of IROKs for my 4BT S-10 project, though with the Dana 44 front axle I'd be looking at a set of 37's max.

Get the biggest tire your ever gonna want to run, put them on, and have fun breaking that 44... When it goes, not if lol, throw in a 60. If you do a lot of mud bogging, I'd go with the boggers, the Iroks only did so so.
