I converted my 1998.5 3500 2wd dually from the 5-speed to a 6-speed. The transmission came out of a 1999 or 2000 model that had an under hood fire. I really like to 6-speed. In my opinion, it's the perfect match for the power/torque range of my 12-valve. The 5-speed seemed to have too much ratio gap between 3rd and 4th. The 6-speed fills that gap. Some folks say the 6-speed is not as strong as the 5-speed. My 12-valve is pretty straight forward (tweaked pump and cold-air intake, soon to get 4" turbo-back exhaust) and I use it to pull my 16' car trailer, 6'x12' cargo trailer and 18' jet boat.

I believe their are 2 different 6 speeds. The nv5600 and not sure about the other. Mines a 2wd so I cant be much of a help but I'm interested to see what you find out. Good luck.
