Depends what you want to do (all out drag truck, street/strip, or daily driver that sees occasional track time), how fast you want to go, and just how much you are willing to spend.

im wanting to learn all that i can about everything diesel. im ready to live, eat, breath anything and everything diesel, sir. my goal is to have a strictly daily driver diesel to tow with ,and have one strictly for race. Then possibly go for something like fastest daily driver. im so dedicated to do this that im ready to relocate to learn all i can.

What vehicle are you wanting to prep for race? Right now I'm in the process of tackling a record for the fastest street legal 6.0 Ford Powerstroke (current record sits at 10.67 @ 127mph). That means intact catalytic converter, EGR in place and working, minimal smoke, street tires (cheater slicks), and working lights and windshield wipers. Started with a 2005 F-250 SC/LB 2WD, engine is out and at the shop getting a full work over, next step is going to be a race ready ATS transmission (once my account is healthy enough). She will have W/M, no propane or nitrous though

Sounds nice, right now I have a 87 f250 2wd zf five speed standard cab long bed with 6.9 IH non turbo straight pipes no converters. If there's not a lot I can do with that then I will use it as a hauler n get somethin else just finding it hard to get any good info on aftermarket for them

Theres basically no performance potential in that engine at all. How much are you wanting to spend on one? A p-pumped 12v Cummins is an excellent place to start if you are not wanting to buy a newer truck.

You seriously have to have a cat and EGR to hold that record?

To the OP. I would buy a single cab 4x4 6.4 powerstroke, do all the deletes, cai, a batomowheel, 60hp nozels, air dog or fass, head studs, suncoast or ATs trany, a little nitrus, custum tunes, ladder bars, and a 4 inch exhaust. And you should be running a damn good track time. :c:
