duramax vs 8.1L Big block

A guy i work with has a 02 2500hd extended cab 4wd w/ 3.73 rear ALL STOCK and swears he can leave me towing or racing. My truck is a 03 4wd reg cab w/3.73 rear 4" exhaust K&N intake and a Hypertech 90hp programmer! He keeps wanting to race for pink slips what do you think?

bobcat67 06-24-2009 07:56 PM

well I wouldn't do it cause I don't know, I can't afford too lose my truck, if you had EFI Live or just a PPE i'd try it, but for pinks, hell no, just wager like $100 or something that way it sucks for one of ya but you're not out of a truck:c:

REDRIDE13 06-24-2009 07:58 PM

yeah I cant afford to loose my truck ether. I have tried like hell to try to race him for fun, or money. but he wont. it slmost made me think he had NOS or something. but i poped his hood, and looked under the truck and it is all stock, he is just real proud of his gasser

1badcummins 06-24-2009 08:00 PM

tell him that the only reason he wants to race for titles is cuz no one actually does that he is scared

bobcat67 06-24-2009 08:03 PM

sounds like he's a few marbles short of a full jar, I sure wouldn't do it, i honestly think if you can hook up you'd smoke him, especially with a little boosted launch, but lets say something breaks or whatever, then you're out a truck and yours is more valuable in my opinion than hsi anyway just because of the diesel:U:

redneckbuckeye 06-24-2009 08:11 PM

Just tell him if he really wants to race put up 100.00 or shut up. To many things could happen that might change the out come, plus I really wouldn't want to take a truck from some one who can't afford it.

REDRIDE13 06-24-2009 08:17 PM

i think on top end he would get me bc my truck cutts off at 98ish

bobcat67 06-24-2009 08:29 PM

so does his if it's completely stock and if he said it goes faster than 98ish he's full of it cause that's stock governor on chevy's

RSWORDS 06-24-2009 08:53 PM

Those 8.1's can move. Esspecially if he has a good programmer on it. GM pulls ALOT of power out of the tune from the factory. I would be careful!

sidekick 06-24-2009 09:33 PM

lookin under the hood wount show nothin if there is a programmer on that gasser but it is your truck so its your call id run him for braggen rights and money or a nice dinner for the family winners choice.

damn if you were close if slip in a little tune on that truck :D

FastCR 06-24-2009 11:29 PM

x2 on tell him to put up some cash or shut the hell up.

yankeeflatsdiesel 06-25-2009 02:11 AM

:booo::booo::booo: not worth it even if you could beat him he must watch the show pinks and has an ego the size of texas.

scrotom 06-25-2009 05:20 AM

Don't do it, check out the june issue of diesel world. The 8.1 is a monster. def get efi live or ppe before you mess with that sh t biscuit.

REDRIDE13 06-27-2009 04:59 PM

just an update. I did not get to race him bc he traded it in on a nissan altima! LMAO

PowerStrokin 11-22-2009 10:39 PM

Well thats funny!! I had a 8.1 for about a month after my powerstroke was stolen and it hauled ass. It would burn the tires at a light and it was stock. I raced my buddies 6.0 with a edge in it and i beat him with my stock 8.1.....

Woody35 11-24-2009 09:20 PM

no replacement for displacement:tu:

holy shi--.....They're honestly that fast? They're at 340hp 450ft-lbs of torque IIRC...I thought the duramax or a powerstroke would be able to trump that. Similar horsepower but way more torque.

REDRIDE13 11-25-2009 06:35 PM

I think it is the fact that they dont have to wory about turbo-lag. I cant wait to get my PPE! Hypertech=sucks

dieseldude03 11-26-2009 10:05 PM

The 8100 (thats 496ci!) gasser can be absolutely brutal with some tweaking. Keep in mind the marine versions of it are rated as high as 500hp! That's in a factory engine with a warranty! The power is there. It's all in the ECM tuning. Buddy had one in a 2500HD with the 5-spd manual trans and 4.10 gearing. Everything stock except a straight-piped exhaust and he could get rubber through 4th gear.

K50 11-27-2009 10:45 AM

LOL....wow! I wish I could see that.

Funny now it's got me thinking of how cheap those 8100's are going for...$9000-$11,000 with low miles just because no one wants a 7-9mpg gas sucking beast. :humm: Would be a fun truck for sure.

dieseldude03 11-27-2009 11:07 AM

His was a 2001 Reg cab 4x4 with 79,000 miles on it. Said it got 8mpg loaded or not. Sold 'er for $9500.00 and bought a 04 PSD that coughed-up it's HPOP the 2nd day he owned it.

Figure all the 8.1L is, is a stroker 454 big-block. Drag racers have spent a lot of money for a lot of years to get that kind of displacement from their BBC's.:tu:

Crude dude 11-27-2009 11:52 AM

Man, my friend had one of those 8.1s. His was prob a 2002? He installed exhaust, CAI and a Hypertech. It was a reg cab 4x4 with an auto. Even after all that work it was a major pig. Id have to see another one that ran good to change my opinion. I bet the D-Max would whoop it pretty bad.

REDRIDE13 11-28-2009 11:06 AM

wish I had a answer....It was the race that never happend LOL.

PowerStrokin 11-29-2009 07:32 PM

I dont know.... it would be close... Mine was a 02 ext cab long bed with an automatic (Which happens to be the allison) I got it at a chevy dealership that was selling there repos they got back. Only paid 5,900 for it.... should have kept it

midnite><og 11-30-2009 03:49 PM

maybe he's just flabergasting... since the "pink slip" isnt actually pink, so ok and get a pink slip of paper. wire doen ":edit: you" on it, and win.. see what happens... either way, he didnt specify

The 8.1 is a design of its own, It was used as marine engines before making its way to teh trucks.

K50 11-30-2009 05:53 PM

Yeah the 502 was a crate motor, I thought that's what the 8.1L Vortec used as a block.

cumminsdad08 11-30-2009 06:47 PM

we got a bunch of them 8.1 at work and they haul man, i wouldn't toy with one of them. they pull awsome too. we have them in 2500,3500 singles and two 4500 box vans, and they ride like a dream. and also i got a new chevy gasser 6.0 and don't seem to have a problem gettin over 98 with it.:w2: only done it a couple of times gets kinda scary with the utility box i got on it.

I drove a 8.1L with the Alison auto 1 time. It was a crew cab 2500 and I believe it was a 2002 model. I don't really know much about them but I was disapointed with it. I honestly thought it was a dog.
I have a hard time believing a stock duramax couldn't take it.
