Got me a new Cross Bow today.....

since i had shoulder surgery i can't use a Compound bow any more so i've been on the lookout for a nice crossbow. i've seen a few like at walmart in pawnshops for 150bux but i wanted something nice and inexpensive..... so i found one of these today...

150 pound pull, 345FPS i think MSRP is $486 and i found this Gem for $125 looks like it has never been fired.

now to get some bales of hay to shoot at cause i'm too broke to buy a nice target.....

so what crossbows or compound bows do ya'll have?

I have an old Bear Alaskan (first bow I owned), 2 browning afterburners, one browning adrenaline sx, and a Martin hunter (60# @28"). I shot 100+ times per day in high school and went to 3-D shoots in the winter and summer and got 1st place in all youth classes and scored higher than most adults (shots were same for youth as adult), but haven't hardly shot since I moved off of the farm and started carpentry. Now I can only get a 12" group at 20 yards with the brownings when I was asprin accurate at 40 yards before. That's why I got the Recurve.
Can you use crossbows to hunt where you are? I think you have to have a doctor's note in South Dakota.

crossbows are legal now. they use to be only for Handicapped people. now anyone can use them.

we hunt on alot of WMA's and there are a few that are archery only. there are some HUGE deer on the archery only WMA's so i plan on getting atleast one this year. and archery season last longer than Firearms season....

ya might want to be careful shotting in hay bales those bolts will go right thru a normal square bale no problem, you need to get ya a Block target there expensive but they work good:U:

I have a new fred bear,an old browning compound.an old darton compound i let my dad use and a browning crossbow that i let my uncle use because of shoulder problems, some of the block targets arent that much gander mountain has them for about 30 bucks and you can prob. get some in the clearance sections at G.M.,or Cabellas,or bass pro shops :humm:

well i have a styrofoam block target that the bolts just blow right through.... so i figure if i get 9 square bales and stack them 3 high and 3 deep behind the foam it'll work out ok.... i have a friend that has some old moldy hay he said i could get....

Gander Mountain® > Gander Mountain Voyageur Target - Hunting > Archery > Targets : here is a cheap target works pretty good

You'll want to shoot the bolts into the end of the bale(so it goes in perpendicular to the grain) otherwise the bolts will bury themselves into the bale and you'll have a hell of a time getting them out.

Shooting into the side of a big round bale works pretty good too.
