Really going to depend on how much you are willing to spend on it and if made in the USA is important to you. Colt should be at the top of the list simply because they hold their value better if you ever was to sell it. I personally am willing to pay a more for made in the USA so here is a list of 1911's made in the USA in the order I would choose: Wilson Combat (if I could afford one), Les Baer (if I could afford one), Colt, Sig Sauer (German co I know but all their 1911s are made here), Para, Smith & Wesson, Ruger, Remington, Kimber
Foreign made 1911's: Springfield (some are made here but most are made in Brazil), Taurus, Armscor, Rock Island, American Tactical Far from a complete list but maybe it will help you out. |
Bryce you left out, ED BROWN, CASPIAN, & NIGHTHAWK :humm:

Hey it was late and I don't have any first hand experience with those. However if I had to choose one and was planning on carrying it everyday and didn't care if it got dinged up I would pick a sig. Cheaper than a colt but with better quality in my opinion.

i'm new here, but im a gun dealer so for whatever it is worth.
i just bought my wife a sig c3 really nice gun great fit and finish but for me, my carry is a rock island with 3 inch barrel. i know what your thinking.... i bought it at dealer pricing for 3hundred something, i fitted the beaver tail, saftey extended mag release etc... change a few springs etc, im under 500 dollars and i guarantee it shoots just as well at 25 yards as my kimber undercover. another great quality gun that often gets dumped on is taurus. they aint the piece of crap they use to be. the way i look at it.. i carry what i dont mind being taken away from me in the case i need to use it. my cheapo 1911 will kill some one and be confiscated just as easy as my STI. plus i love going to the range and out shooting guys who spent way to much on a gun.. just my .02 |

I second Taurus. I have a PT24/7 Taurus that I carry everyday and it has had thousands of rounds through it and never failed me. Its not the 1911 but I am just saying for quality Taurus is been good.

i carry a rock island armory 1911 in .45 everyday. swapped around and got it new in the box for about $400.i put hogue swelled palm grips and a wilson combat recoil reducer on it and have a chip mccormick 10 round mag for it. the trigger was better out of the box than my friends colt commander. it shoots very good, i killed a boar with it swimming a river at about 50 yards, and have killed several pigs, armadillos, and even a coyote with it since then. The only complaint i have with it is i wish it had better sights on it.
I know it's off the subject but i recently got some ammo loaded by liberty. have you seen these? 78gr. hollow point at 1900 fps. with 600 ft/lbs. You should see what they do to a armadillo!!!! I keep one mag loaded with these and another with Hornady critical defense 185gr. |
ive got a sig 5" barrel 1911, great gun. would definatley recomend. dont own one but magnum research makes a nice one too for the money. if your wanting to stay in the 500-600 range id say rock island or ati. im impressed by both of them for the price. krauts make the ati and the rock islands are made using colts old tooling. ive got a para gi expert never had an issue with and a ruger that hasnt been shot. bought the wife a kimber sapphire ultra carry II that will not get shot.

I have a Para subcompact double stack 45. Good gun other than it does not like rounds that have light powder loads.

Lately I've been buying CASPIAN 1911

Talk about quality, Ive got over 46k rounds through my S&W 1911 .45. She has performed flawlessly. I carried this weapon platform throughout my LE career. The score: Me and S&W-2 , bad guys-0
