After clay bar?
 

I have a ton of over spray on my truck (silver epoxy paint), my truck looks like a black truck with chrome glitter all over it. In fact I have been told by 2 detail shops it is the worse they have seen. They both told me that claybar or razor blade is going to be the only way to get it off.

Based on the price that they gave me, I am going to buy a claybar and try to do that part myself. With the exception of the top and hood, (I can not reach it) If the claybar will not work, I will have to have someone do the razor blade technique, as I do not have the nerves to try that myself.

My question is, after I use the claybar, what wax should I buy and how should I apply it? I had the truck buffed and waxed about a month ago, to try to remove some of the overspray but it did not work at all. I have also not had good luck in the past with detail shops waxing it because there is always some swirl marks.

I won't be able to do this for a month or so, so if I have to order something online to get the best stuff I have time. I am not sold on the stuff from Pep Boys or auto zone, I am also not sold on the stuff that is used by detail shops, I am sure they buy bulk cheaper products.

Thanks for the advise, I do not usually do this myself. The contractor responsible paid me $300.00 for the damage, but that is only about 1/2 of what the detail shops are willing to do it for.

I'm not sure how to answer about what type of wax to use. The reason for the swirl marks is dirty paint. The claybar is the best at getting paint clean.

Now about your overspray. If the truck was mine I would try the claybar. Next I would try bug and tar remover. A third effort would be a product called Acryli Clean by PPG. The third I have never used on paint...but it was very good at removing residue from price tags that were removed and left glue. Goof-off has some very good products with an expanding line. I would use the Acryli Clean in a hidden area first.

KOI has auto paint stores in my area (Cincinnati), maybe they could be of some help.These are all low budget remedies but worth a shot.

the only problem with this, is this clay is so aggressive it has been known to cause paint micro marring from the clay. That would require a re-buff with a finishing product and then follow up with a wax. However, it may NOT mar your paint, it all depends on how soft/hard your paint is and how aggressively you use the clay on the vehicle. If youd rather NOT start with the aggressive clay, you could try their mild clay, which is STILL much more aggressive than the OTC clays you can pick up. Heres a link to that as well

Im pointing you towards the Meguiars Detailing clay in either the mild or aggressive formulas, mainly because i have used both and depending on how bad it is, if mild wont remove aggressive will. Just remember this, i always start with the "Least Aggressive Method" and then step up if i need to. Aaron, My suggestion would be to wash the truck with Dawn Dish soap. That will remove most, if not all, of the wax that was previously put down. Then go with the clay bar and see if it helps remove the over-spray. It will likely take a lot of elbow grease. The clay bar should take some the swirls out. I would suggest a quality swirl remover then polish and wax. Your choice of products largely depends on what you want to spend. Like Zach said, it's best to start with the more mild products and go stronger if need be.

:tu: As usual, I would suggest the Adams products. Your budget and availability will decide that for you. Good Luck. I've removed road paint with Swirl & Haze Remover and an orbital polisher. Hopefully the epoxy comes off.

Mark - last i knew clay bars didnt remove swirls? swirls are defects in the paint, clay doesnt remove paint....

Meguiar's Tech Wax 2.0 works well for me. I've been detailing a lot of auction cars and it doesn't leave swirl marks. :tu:

no wax will swirl vehicles, however application/removal in the wrong way WILL swirl vehicles
